Prologue
The morning started with Merlin running down the corridors like…put it in Arthur's words… like a complete idiot. He was late yet again because he decided to stay up reading his magic book. Oh Arthur will kill him! Carrying the silver breakfast tray in one hand, he ran up to the prince's door and pushed it open, without knocking.
"MERLIN!" There we go, the normal routine of 'You're late' started up again. "…Seriously Merlin, why do I even bother keeping you around?"
"Because I am a nice cheery person, and don't deny it but you love having me around." Merlin grinned mischievously. The servant kept his back turned as he arranged the breakfast on the table. He could feel the 'prince glare' upon his back, enough to make anyone shudder and dance in their shoes. It didn't bother Merlin, it only showed he won that comment.
Arthur glided across to the table and sat down at his chair, beginning to eat the fruit and the cooked breakfast. Merlin moved away and began to make the Prince's bed.
"After you've done that I need you to pick out some normal clothes for me. I have a meeting with my father within an hour. Then I need you to muck out my stables and saddle two horses, we're going on patrol." Arthur passed his orders down, snapping a long the way. Merlin put it behind him though as he picked up the laundry and put it in a washing basket. If the Prince was in one of his moods he was going to leave him to let him work it out himself. He wasn't going to be target practice today.
(Break)
"Merlin can you do anything right?" Arthur snapped. Merlin had just about lost it with the Prince. His foul mood had not lifted at all since he woke up.
"What have I done this time, sire?" Merlin sighed. Arthur glared at him, Merlin knew what he had said and he wasn't going to change what he said either. He stood still, head up and grinned his meddling grin.
Then Arthur hit the roof.
His face went red and his eyes turned dark in anger. "What have you done this time? Merlin, what do you do? You are late every morning, you are clumsy, you're an idiot, you can't get anything right. You're stupid and you have to back chat everything I give you a chore. A normal servant wouldn't do that. A normal servant would keep their heads down and do what they are supposed to do, without the clumsiness, without the back chatting, without getting anything wrong!" Arthur shouted. Merlin felt the colour drain from his face, his eyes going glassy and blurry. He glanced at the ground and refused to let the tears drop.
When the serving boy looked up again, he spoke softly. "Is there anything else you would like me to do, my lord?"
"No you are finished for today. Have tomorrow off, I'm patrolling the lower town and around in the forest with a group of knights." Arthur spoke, anger still in his voice. His manservant bowed slightly, finding a stray tear dropping onto the floor he had cleaned this afternoon. He then turned and walked out of the prince's chambers.
