Disclaimer: Don't own Rookie Blue.

A.N. Just a short little scene that wouldn't get out of my head until I got it on paper. If some of the events were written wrong - let me know - I haven't watched the first season in a while...

Enjoy!

It bothered him that she called Callaghan instead of calling him. He thought back to all of the times they worked together, when she relied on him:

…their first day together, she told him that she wasn't scared because he was there…

…when Benny fled the hospital, she called him, not Callaghan…

…she asked him what he knew about plumbing and asked him to help Marie, not her boyfriend…

…she had turned to him for comfort after she killed a man…

…even in awkwardness, she had tried to talk to him about Bibby (a mistake he hoped wouldn't come back to bite him)…

…she turned to him when it looked like her father might have murdered someone…

…she had only told him the truth about how she felt after she got shot…

…she turned to him for comfort when Luke was shot – and he stayed with her…

…she had called him when she was stuck in the Laundromat…

And yet, when it mattered, when she went to the storage locker and found the evidence, she hadn't called him.

He didn't know why it bothered him but he made sure they were assigned together for the next shift.

After an hour of driving (in which he was driving), he glanced at her. Once again, she was really quiet. "I'm sorry for not having your back."

"It's fine Sam. I'm fine."

"No, it is not fine." He pulled over. "I don't get it Andy. I'm your partner. Why didn't you call me?" There, it was out in the open.

Andy blinked, trying to organize her thoughts. "I don't want to be that rookie screw-up Sam." Both of them were thinking of what she really wanted to say: 'a tube of lipstick and a badge'. Sam would never tell her but the night she had gone up with Luke to the cabin, he got Diaz drunk enough (not exactly hard when Epstein was shouldering the tab and Diaz wanted to forget how Peck hurt him) to tell him what really happened with Detective Bibby.

"You're not!" he denied her statement vehemently - in reality denying both 'rookie screw-up' and 'tube of lipstick with a badge'.

"Hear me out. I wanted to follow Luke's lead even though you didn't agree. When I got to the storage place and found out there was a locker under Zoe's name, I didn't think Ray would show up. I called Luke because I wanted you to see that I do trust my gut and it leads me to the right place. If I had any thought that Ray was going to come, you would have been the first one I would have called. To repeat your words 'there is nobody I'd rather go through that door with'. I trust you with everything and I always trust you to have my back." She trusted him to have her back but she wanted to prove to him that he could always trust her to have his back as well.

Hearing her say it made him feel even guiltier than he already was – if that was even possible. "I'm sorry" he apologized again.

Andy sighed and rolled her eyes. "And you accuse me of overthinking it."

Luckily for her, a call came in before Sam could get in the last word.
