Puppy in the Window

A dog and a wolf
How can the two be
For the wolf hates the pup
There is mutuality
But does the wolf truly detest
The blonde little dog
My eyes speak the truth
Though my voice: an icy, dense fog
The wolf doesn't hate the pup
The pup of golden fur
Both have had troubles to face,
Problems to endure
I am the wolf
Silver, icy and cold
He is the pup
Gold, warm, and bold
His friends speak of warmth
The kind of family they have
I don't need, or want that warmth
What I want to have
Is the puppy in the window
To see his shining face
To watch him lash out
To make his world a happy place
False Royals speak of compassion
Compassion is my foe
For all I know is ice, except
For the puppy in the window
He looks at me fleetingly
Careful not to catch my sight
But I see my puppy in the window
I watch over him at night
I protect him from the nightmares,
I'll protect my puppy and fight
For him
