Angela gave her husband a look of pure hatred as she watched him standing over the small hospital bassinet. He was smiling and cooing at the infant inside, and he let the child grab his fingers as if this were the most normal of situations. But it wasn't, and she hated him for pretending.
Arthur looked up from the baby, over to where Angela was sitting in bed. Knowing exactly what her facial expressions meant, he walked over to the bed, sat down, and placed his hand over hers. She snatched it away. He glared back at her for a quick moment, then with a smile, he went back to pretending.
"You know you can't keep him Angie," was all he said, standing up and placing a small kiss on her forehead.
Walking towards the door, he paused once more to look at his son. "It's a shame too," he said smiling down at the tiny boy, "he's a real good-looking kid. He looks more like you than Nathan does." With that he turned back around and walked out of the room, as if this were the most normal of situations.
Waiting a few moments until she was sure he wasn't coming back, Angela willed herself out of the bed and walked over to pick up the child she did indeed know she could never keep. But holding him then, looking straight into his deep brown eyes, made her realize something for the first time. Just because she knew she couldn't keep him, didn't mean she didn't want to, and at that moment, she wanted to more than anything else in the world.
She knew what Kaito had told them, and she knew, as with all of his informer's predictions, that he was right. It would come true and the lives of millions depended on her decision, but what about her life?
How was she supposed to spend the rest of her life pretending that, for the better part of a year, she didn't have this beautiful little boy growing inside of her?
How was she going to lie, straight-faced, to her five-year-old when he asked where the baby brother he'd been wanting for months just suddenly disappeared to?
All Nathan talked about was the baby, and Angela knew that the hurt in his eyes when she told him (untruthfully) that his brother was dead would only double the pain she felt when she gave him away.
The more she thought about it, and the more she watched her now sleeping baby's face twitch adorably in his sleep, the more she hoped that Kaito had made a mistake. Besides, Gabriel didn't seem at all terrible to her.
Gabriel was a beautiful name for a boy. It sounded elegant, yet strong - almost regal. it would go perfectly with the Petrelli name, and even better when paired with Nathan's. When choosing his name, she had to make sure that it matched up with Nathan's, so that he would never feel even a bit less than his brother in excellence. Two great names that would announce to the world that these two handsome, intelligent brothers - Nathan and Gabriel Petrelli - were special. It made her proud.
But Gabriel would never hear his name said along side his brother's, nor would his last name ever be Petrelli. He would, however, keep his first name. Gabriel was the name of God's highest angel, and as a parting gift to his mother that he would never know his father gave, he would keep this name. Besides, regardless of how evil he was supposed to grow up to be, he would always be an angel to her.
