Chapter 1
Numair stood on the ramparts of the royal palace in Corus and looked out toward the city that sprawled beneath him. On any other morning it would have been a beautiful sight with the Sun glistening of the Gods golden statues outside their respective temples and the fog rising of the distant river. But not today. Today smoke rose instead of fog and it was so thick he couldn't tell whether the statues were even still there.
He heard someone come up beside him and glanced over to see Jon looking out toward the enemy that surrounded them. Jon sighed and turn to Numair. "At least it's a beautiful day that we meet our end."
"You think it will come to that?" Numair replied. The mood suddenly growing very serious. "I think its possible. The rebels got reinforcements last night through our defense. They've taken the city and almost half the Royal Forest. Our archers on the walls can't even shoot at them to aid our soldiers." Numair winced, those were heavy blows to the Tortallian army. "Can't you use the Dominion Jewel?" Numair asked only half hopefully; he already knew the answer. Two days ago the rebels had made a surprise attack. Thayet had been with the 1st Rider group when it happened. She took three arrows to the chest in bled out before the healers could even get to her. Jon had been mad with grief and couldn't concentrate enough to even do simple magic let alone control the Jewel.
Jon winced and the pain that hadn't been in his eyes yet that day came back. "I would if I could Numair, you know that. Besides, I'm not the only one grieving loved ones." Jon snapped defensively causing Numair to look away. Had it really only been yesterday that he had lost his Magelet? He looked down at his hands, they were still covered in her blood...or was it his blood? He couldn't even remember. He didn't care anymore. The only thing he cared about was making them pay for taking his Magelet from m. The rest he would worry about later he thought as he looked up with a hard glint of revenge shining in his eyes.
He heard Jon sigh and looked back at his king and friend. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that, I just haven't been without her for so long..." there was a pause and then he continued, "I'm not even sure if I should keep going or just end it now." His last words were barely a whisper.
