Chapter Uno

A lone figure walked the empty streaks of Magnolia with a large basket in their arms, exertion catching up to them and making them tired but they knew they had to get to their destination. It took a good few months to do this project and for them to stop when the completion was near wasn't a choice in their book. Inside the basket, minor stirring occurred which made the figure curse under their breath and call forth another sleeping spell to stop the stirring.

'He must be getting stronger, my sleeping spell isn't affecting him much. Damn me and my eagerness, I should of been more cautious.'

The figure just kept on going, using a sleeping spell from time to time when the basket started to stir again. It was only a matter of time when the being inside the basket was going to let his presence known if the figure didn't do everything in their might to keep the being quiet. After what seemed like an hour and several more sleeping spells later, the figure trudged to their destination, exhausted and in pain, and set the basket at the door. Uncovering the basket for a second, they softly kissed the sleeping being on the cheek before covering him again and knocking loudly on the door. The figure didn't move until they heard shuffling on the side, quickly hiding in the shadows and watched as the door opened and revealed a drowsy Gray Fullbuster. The black haired teen let out a long yawn before looking around the empty Magnolia streets with a confused look.

'Ding dong ditch? At this time of night?'

He was about to close the door when the being in the basket started to stir again, a tiny whimper catching his attention. The teen picked up the basket by the handle and uncovered it, softly gasping when he saw that inside was a baby. He had soft pink hair and pale skin, kind of like Gray's, and the chubbiest cheeks he's ever seen. The baby was donned in a simple polka dotted onesie with a note pinned to the small pocket. The ice make mage took another look outside to see if anyone misplaced their baby but saw no one.

"Well….no sense leaving them here."

With one last look, Gray carried the basket inside and shut the door. The figure in the shadows smiled and went on their way, confident that the child was in good hands. The slumbering child began to stir again, causing Gray to jump and quickly set the basket down on the nearest table. Uncovering the basket, the child opened his eyes and scrunched up his face at the sight of the black haired teen and he started to whimper. Gray wasted no time and picked up the frightened child, unpinning the note before settling the baby on his shoulder with their face in his neck. He began to rock a bit, the child quieting quickly as he read the note.

'Male, 3 months old. Born on July 7. Please go to this location if anything is needed'

The address was written in fancy scrawl, Gray flipping over the note to see if anything else was written and let out an upset noise when there wasn't. He looked at the quieted baby that currently had his face buried in Gray's neck, a bright blue eye suddenly peering back at him until a chubby face was facing his. A wave of anger washed over Gray's body as they both stared at each other. He couldn't fathom the fact that someone would leave such a precious baby out on a stranger's doorstep, his pudgy cheeks, innocent face and unique combo of midnight black and sapphire blue eyes already worming their way into Gray's heart. The teen snapped out of his reverie when the child rubbed his face sleepily and set his face back into his neck, the child seemingly wanting to go to sleep. Much to Gray's relief. Letting out a yawn, he snatched the blanket out of the basket and made his way towards his bedroom, only to stop when the child started to squirm and fuss. Panic rose from his depths, the teen rocking the child in hopes of subduing him but that only made him more fussier.

"I'm sorry little guy but I'm not good at this parenting thing so a little clue would suffice."

As if on cue, the baby's tummy started to growl, Gray swiping the note and put on his coat. He raised an eyebrow at the new writing that appeared on the paper.

'Follow the spots of light and you'll reach your destination.'

The baby started to fuss once more, the black haired teen walking out into the empty streets and locked his door. It was completely dark except for the streetlights and the random blue dots of light that seemed to be leading off somewhere. Gray was hesitant yet he followed the trail of lights anyway while rocking the child in his arms whenever he started to fuss. The trail of lights led to a small building with a red cross on it. The light of the building where on and a sign that read 'come on in!' was on the door as well, the teen slowly walking towards it and entering in the building. It was empty, scarily empty. No receptionists at the desks or nurses holding reports or any patients sitting around and waiting. The pure white room had nobody in it and no sound was heard except for tiny growls coming from the child's tummy and the clicking of an old fashion clock.

"Hello? Anyone here?"

No other sounds were heard but Gray still waited for someone to show. Besides, this is the place the paper told him to go and he wasn't backing out because of an eerily quiet room. The baby had enough, his tummy was starting to give him pain now from the lack of food. Gray winced when the child suddenly wailed and started to rock him once more which ended up making the baby more disappointed. The sound of heels clicking on the white tiled floor was heard from a distance, a young woman with light brown hair and pretty silver eyes hurrying into the waiting room. She was wearing a standard nurse's outfit, which was pink instead of white, and a simple pair of black pumps.

"Oh boy! Someone has a strong pair of lungs I see!"

The child quieted down significantly, much to Gray's relief, and started to whimper while reaching out to the smiling nurse. Seeing that the baby wanted her instead of him, Gray handed the nurse the child which she happily accepted.

"I'm sorry for the wait! Usually I'm out here doing paperwork but I got caught up with other duties. How may I help you and this little one here? You can call me Sabrina by they way!"

Gray smiled politely and shook the free hand Sabrina offered and explain the situation for his late visit, the nurse listening intently. Once he finished explaining, she smiled and led him and the child down the hallway to the break room and took out a few bottles of milk, warming one in the microwave for thirty seconds. The teen watched her test the milk before putting the rubber nipple in the baby's mouth, the child downing the bottle within minutes. As soon as he was done, the nurse put him over his shoulder and patted his back.

"Have you heard anything about a missing baby? I found him at my doorstep not to long ago and maybe it was a mistake?"

Sabrina pursed her lips and cradled the now slumbering child in her arms, pondering a bit before shaking her head.

"Come to think of it...no I actually haven't. The patients I've had over a few days have been nothing but people with cuts or scrapes that can be easily tended to. I haven't delivered a baby in years. You're not going to search for somebody this late are you?"

Gray sighed and shook his head, letting out a large yawn and slumping forward. He didn't mind at all taking care of the child while he searched for his parents but the toll it was going to take on his body already worried him. He wasn't getting any sleep period and taking care of a child in his neediest state was going to cut his sleeping time even shorter. After a few minutes of thinking, Gray made his mind up and held his arms out for the baby and wrapped him up in the blanket once he was in his arms.

"Is it alright if I take some of those bottles? He might get hungry again…."

"Of course you can!" Sabrina chirped with a warm smile. "In fact you can have all the bottles I have. There's only a few and like I mentioned before I've hadn't handled a baby in a long time. Oh and since you're new at this "parenting thing", I have a great child rearing book for you to have! Who knows how long this search is going to take y'know?"

The nurse took out a baby bag from one of the cabinets and filled it with the prepared bottles she had left and the book, also packing some diapers, baby wipes and a few onesies.

"Here you go! If you need anything else, you know where to find me. I'm here 24/7."

Gray thanked the nurse and slung the bag over his shoulder, walking into the cool night once more. He followed the trail of lights back to his home and as soon as he unlocked the door and got in, the teen gently flopped on the couch and went back to sleep with the child safely in his arms.

"Where the hell is Gray?"

Natsu paced up and down the porch of a restaurant he and the team were accompanying while they wait for Gray, huffing and puffing in impatience. Lucy was actually happy for the delay, the blonde hating the particular mission they accepted- well more like Erza accepted. Yet she worried a bit, Gray was hardly ever late to meet up for a mission. Her mind started to wander about the different possibilities of why their last member hadn't shown up yet (all of them were bad) until Natsu slammed his hands on the table the four reserved and snapped her out of her trance.

"I have a suggestion, since Ice Princess isn't here we should go on the mission anyway and just leave him. Sounds good?"

"Aye!" Happy exclaimed.

Lucy rolled her eyes at Natsu's outburst and Erza gave him a mean look. This mission was a team effort, Erza wanted them all to be there and that included Gray as well.

"Natsu, just wait like I've told you for what seems to be the fifteenth time today. There must be a good reason why Gray is late. Have patience."

Natsu pouted and crossed his arms childishly. He said nothing towards what Erza said, not wanting to make the scarlet knight angry. After a few seconds, he began to whisper in Happy's ear, the Exceed nodding and spreading his wings; smacking Lucy in the face with his soft feathers. Before the blonde could say anything, the Exceed lifted himself up from the table the group was at and looked for the ice user. The blue cat stayed airborne for a few minutes before grinning and yelling, "Gray up ahead!"

Natsu got up and cracked his knuckles excitedly while Lucy and Erza sighed in relief. Soon enough, the black haired teen jogged to their location all out of breath with a bundle carrying the child in his arms. His hair and clothes were disheveled and there were noticeable bags under his eyes.

"Wow Ice Princess," Natsu piped up while Gray tried to catch his breath. "You look like shit. What's in the bundle anyways?"

The Dragonslayer started to approach the dark haired teen only to back away when Gray gave him a murderous glare. Lucy shivered at the intensity of it and even Erza backed away from Gray a bit.

"Can we go to the guild? Please? I know we have a mission but I really need to talk to Master Makarov."

Natsu and Happy groaned collectively, making Lucy roll her eyes again but Erza nodded at his request.

"Whatever in that bundle seems to be the good reason that you were late, like I've been telling Natsu over here. Time was lost but the quicker we do this the quicker we can leave."

Gray nodded vigorously and shifted the bundle in his arms, the action catching the scarlet haired knight's eye yet she said nothing. The five left the establishment and made their way towards the guild. The black haired teen hoped that the guild would be at least a little quiet but his hopes were soon smashed into tiny little pieces when he saw Natsu go to Gajeel and challenge him to a brawl.

Then chaos started to happen.

The brawl between Dragonslayers ended up morphing into a guild fight, the bundle in Gray's arms started to twitch when the ruckus started and Gray silently panicked. The fight grew more intense, chair being smashed and tables thrown across the room. The bundle started to shake more and Gray could tell that his little secret was waking up and fast. And to make his nightmare even worse, a large foot popped out of nowhere and
stomped in the middle of the guild hall with a loud voice saying, "STOP!"

The fighting immediately stopped and everyone went quiet as Master Makarov eyed the guild members with a fierce look. The child finally stopped squirming but he let out a piercing wail that turned everyone's attention at the ice user, much to his dismay. Letting out a defeated sigh, Gray began shifting the bundle so he can lay the child over his shoulder and rock him, ignoring his guild members as he tried to console the crying baby. Erza approached him quietly and removed the blanket, the guild gasping as she revealed the child that was in Gray's arms. He stopped crying when he saw Erza but scrunched his face in fear when the scarlet haired knight tried to take him away from Gray The infant let out a weak wail and clutched onto the dark haired teen tighter, the ice user batting Erza's hands away from the him. With a few more rocks and some comforting back rubs, the tiny infant calmed down; letting out little coos while he played with Gray's silver chain. This wasn't the way he wanted to talk to the guildmaster but had no choice in telling the whole guild about his predicament.

"Master I need help. He was left abandoned at my doorstep in a basket. All he had with him was a blanket with a small note attached stating his birth date and gender but no name. I don't know who the mother or father is or where to look."

Master Makarov shrunk back to his original size and approached Gray, holding his hands out for the baby. With reluctance, the ice user lowered the child down for the older male to take but stopped once the child began to fuss again. Makarov managed to pull the child away from Gray and winced from the piercing scream the baby let out.

"Alright, alright! That's enough. I understand you're upset but I'm not going to hurt you so quiet that crying down, little one."

That seemed to have an affect on the child, the baby quieting a tad and the only sounds coming from him were little sniffles. Mira handed the guildmaster a tissue, the older man wiping the baby's face and nose. Tossing the soiled tissue away, he turned to Gray while rocking the child.

"It's a shame that such a young child would be abandoned by his parents so early. But all of that will be observed later. I'll get Porlyusica to determine check him out for any sickness or other health concerns. As soon as we get results, I'll start making small teams to help track the child's parents. With that being said, don't you and your team have a mission to do?"

Gray nodded quietly and was going to answer yet a large yawn escaped his lips.

"I'm still pretty tired and didn't get much sleep like I wanted last night so they'll have to go without me, I'll figure out some way to pay for rent and feed the two of us."

The guildmaster nodded and looked down at the child who was starting to get comfortable in his arms. The little baby boy wasn't asleep but had his eyes locked onto Gray's and sparkling with some strong emotion in his eyes. Makarov had a deep feeling that the baby wouldn't want to go back to his parents even if they tracked them down. There was already love in those unique pair of eyes and it held love for only one person in the room.
