I obviously don't own the awesome that is NCIS, but I can wish.

I was adjusting my camera when I first saw the Boss. Being a part of a different police station every two years lets you see the worst and best, but Boss was obviously the most shocking in a completely unshocking way. Tall with pepper hair, icy blue eyes that would cut a man's soul in half with just a look; this man meant business. You could tell by the way he carried himself that he was a serviceman; maybe a marine. Note to self: do not, I repeat NOT, make any jokes about sailors of any kind! No matter how funny you may think it is; Boss may take a chunk outta ya. The first time I saw Boss, I didn't know that he'd take me on. I didn't know that he'd make me transfer through guilt alone. I wish that I knew then to keep my mouth shut, no matter how many movie references I can make from one sentence alone. Here's what happened.

Time: 0600

Who: Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tom Herondale

Where: Gunny's house

When: February 12th, 2003

Baltimore P.D.

The time is 0600, Baltimore PD's finest (aka me) is the first on scene at the house of Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tom Herondale on February 12th, 2003. The next door neighbor has found the Gunny in his own recycling bin outside his house. In the next two hours I will have taken pictures of the scene, taken statements from neighbors and blocked off the perimeter. All normal procedure, except for at 0800, exactly two hours later mind you, two NCIS agents show up; Special Agent Gibbs and his coroner Dr. Mallard (who tells me to call him Ducky). Seeing as the deceased is a Gunnery Sergeant I see no reason not to give up jurisdiction to NCIS, my superior sees a problem however. So it is up to me, once again, to smooth over the faux pas that my oh so wise superior made. I walk up to Gibbs and know right off the bat to not make a single joke or movie reference that I normally would; he doesn't look like he's in a joking mood, if he ever is.

"Special Agent Gibbs, it seems that Detective Brown would like to share jurisdiction considering the Gunny was discharged."

"Still a marine…" Gibbs responds, obviously trying to remember my name.

"DiNozzo sir," I supply.

"Still a marine DiNozzo," Gibbs finishes.

"Well, perhaps since it would be more efficient to pool our resources, would you mind sharing jurisdiction?" I query.

"Fine," Gibbs grunts, "but you're the one who's going to be the middle man in this."

"Yes sir," I respond, glad to keep both men happy.

And that is how I first met the Boss, and got the first taste of how NCIS worked.
