The Black Sweat Band

It was a casual comment during lunch that day. He, Teyla, McKay and Ford had been happily chatting when Teyla had spotted the black sweat band on his wrist and asked him about the significance of it.

He was 16 years old and was preparing for a football match. The coach had already given the team a pep talk in the locker room and had left them to finish getting ready for the match. He was the last one to step out of the changing rooms when she appeared by his side, hands tucked behind her back.

A smile lit up his face in response to her already glowing smile. "Amy, hey. Here to wish me luck?"

He quirked an eyebrow, earning a laugh from her. She shrugged one shoulder and said, "Of a sorts. Close your eyes."

"Wha-"

She rolled her blue eyes with a soft sigh. "Humour me John."

Narrowing his eyes with a tug at the corner of his mouth, he obligingly closed his eyes. "Now hold out one of your hands." He quirked his brow again, prying one eye open to stare at her questioningly. She only pointedly stared back, her expression silently ordering him to do as she said.

Shaking his head, he closed his eyes again and pushed his right hand out. He felt a soft scratch against his skin followed by the warm contact of her hands around his and when his hand was cold again he opened his eyes.

His eyebrows shot up questioningly as he stared at the black sweat band on his wrist. Meeting her eyes he asked, "What's this?"

She shrugged her shoulders again, "A good luck gift?"

"Oh really?" He smirked and she swatted his arm with a laugh.

"Is it perhaps a symbol of sorts?"

He turned his hazel eyes down to peer at the black fabric in question, wrapped around his wrist that was fraying around the edges from years of wearing it. A faint smile flickered upon his face as he recalled Amy's smile and the girl who he was proud to call his best friend through high school.

Part of him ached to find out how'd she gotten on since he said goodbye.

"Just a 'Good luck' gift from a friend."
