They had successfully wrapped up a job in North Carolina and Ames thought they'd jump into the jet and head home.
Instead they put her into a car and drove for almost one hundred miles.
Ames knew better than to complain from the backseat, but seriously, she could imagine better ways to spent the day – this day – crammed into a cheap rental next to Winston who was complaining constantly about Guerrero sitting in the front of the car although he had called shotgun.
In the early evening, however, they arrived at a lake. Guerrero seemed to know his way around, he directed Chance to a secluded inlet with a sandy shore.
"This is Lake Lure! Dirty Dancing was filmed here!" Ames couldn't believe it. She kicked off her shoes and walked towards the waterline, an impression of awe and wonder on her face. Almost reverently she dipped her toes into the waves lazily lapping at the beach. It was just the right temperature.
The men settled down in the sand while she explored the lake, walking in as far as her white cotton dress allowed, not caring that the hemline was getting wet.
Night was slowly falling, but it didn't matter, it was summer and full moon. The world was turning gray-blue, but they could see just fine.
Ames couldn't stop smiling.
"It really is your favorite movie, isn't it, Ames?", Chance laughed.
The answer was written all over her face.
Chuckling, Chance got up and took off his shirt.
"What are you doing?", Ames asked, a little puzzled as he walked towards her, only clad in jeans. He didn't even flinch as the water soaked the fabric.
"Come on." He motioned her to follow him deeper into the water.
"What…?" Ames reluctantly obeyed.
"What's the best scene in the movie?" Chance gave her that million dollar smile he sometimes used to charm Ilsa into something.
"You can't be serious!"
"Don't worry, I've got you!"
She hesitated for a brief moment, then figured what the heck and stepped into touching distance of him. He reached out and wrapped his hands around her waist. His complete lower body was hidden underneath the waterline. All she could see was his muscular chest, slightly sprinkled with droplets of water.
"Just bend your knees and jump", he told her and the next thing she knew he was lifting her up and holding her above his head in perfect balance.
A cool breeze from the mountains ghosted over her skin. This was magic.
As Chance slowly let her slide back into the water she hugged him tightly and pressed his face against his wet chest till tear drops and lake water weren't distinguishable anymore.
Arm in arm they walked back through the waves to the others on the shore. Ilsa had arrived in the meantime and spread out a table cloth. A cake was placed in the middle, a cake with burning candles.
Ames blew them out but she didn't make a wish.
She already had everything she could ever want.
