"You know it has to be done."
He nodded.
"I know."
"You know it was eventually going to come to this."
"Yes."
The sword clatters to the ground.
"You know I can't do it."
Surprise registered across Eragon's features as he looked up at his opponentin confusion. Murtagh was breathing deeply, eyes tightly shut as he struggled to get a hold of his emotions. From Eragon's position on the ground, he could see tiny droplets of water coming out of his former friend's eyes. Something wrenched at the dragon rider's heart as he stood to his feet and continued looking at the man standing before him.
"Murtagh?" he whispered. "Please, let me help you."
Their eyes met. One full of loyalty and confidence, the other full of hurt and pain.
Eragon drew close enough to place a hand on Murtagh's shoulder.
"You know, I wouldn't be able to do it either," he began.
His foe glanced at him, curiosity getting the best of him.
"Eragon, what are you trying to say?" he asked, hopeful eyes rising to meet his.
Tell him, Eragon.
I will, Saphira, if you'll just leave me alone!

Eragon took a deep breath and let his arms fall to his sides. Their gazes never wavered as Eragon took a hesitant step forward, then another, and another, until he was finally face to face with Murtagh.
"I've tried so hard to leave these feelings I had for you alone, but every time I see you, they resurface," Eragon stated. "It took me a while to realize exactly what I felt for you, but it came to me eventually. Murtagh, I-I lo-."
His declaration of love was cut off short by a force pressing gently against his lips. In sudden confusion, it took a while for Eragon to realize that Murtagh was kissing him! Eragon's legs buckled underneath of him, but Murtagh immediately supported him, prolonging the kiss.
I guess what they say is true, Eragon thought. You really do have to keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
