It was pitch dark outside. Elizabeth Bennet tossed in her bed for want of sleep while Jane slept soundly beside her. It was probably few hours past midnight, and she was probably the only member of the Bennet household awake at this ungodly hour. Sleep seemed futile with thoughts of the conversation she had with Mr. Wickham earlier swirling in her head. Compared to the cacophony that resounded throughout the household because of her voluble mother and energetic sisters, the current silence was unnerving. It was against this noise that she heard a clatter against the window. She hurriedly lit her candle and rushed out of bed to investigate. '' Miss Elizabeth'' a loud male voice drawled, 'Elizabeth come quickly. 'Utterly shocked, she peered out to see none other than the current object of her thoughts, but perhaps a little more disheveled in comparison to his earlier appearance at her Aunt Phillip's house owing to his inebriated state. She stood silently at the window willing him to speak with her eyes. She knew very well what such a clandestine meeting could do to her reputation hence proceeded cautiously, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that Mr. Wickham was a perfect gentleman and would not do anything to compromise her. 'Let me in, while your family is asleep, nobody need know as I will be gone by morning.' Lizzie was rendered speechless by his words but slowly summoned the courage to tell him gently that he was out of his senses and it was best that he leave before he did anything reckless. Enraged, Wickham tried to barge into the house and the resulting noises succeeded in arousing the entire household. Mr. Bennet was not amused.

By the next day, all of Meryton had heard of how that cad Wickham tried to break into Mr. Bennet's house to seduce his daughters. Colonel Forster had Wickham under lock and key.

But it was Lizzie was most shaken by the previous night's events. Never before had her judgment been so off the mark regarding a member of her acquaintance. She had thought him a perfect gentleman, but the previous night's events proved that this was far from the truth .Most of all she had never doubted the fact that Wickham could be lying about Mr. Darcy and yet in light of the recent developments she found that she had no right to think the way she did having heard only one side of the story.
