I decided that it was time to make a fanfic about one of my favorite stories of all time: Island of the Blue Dolphins. This is ten years after the book ends, when Karana comes back to the island with her eight year old daughter, (Fake name) Ulape, after her older sister who she had been seperated from 28 years ago. This story is in Ulape's POV.
I walked around the island, my mother Karana beside me. She had told me of her life on the island, and now, here I was, standing in the spot of the once vilage of Ghalas-at. I let the images in my mind take over, trying to see how it looked like when my mother was just a child. Instead, I imagined the wild dogs that roamed the island. And the Devil fish that swam in the ocean. I didn't know much, but I knew it was enough.
"So Ulape, what do you think of the island?"
"I love it!" I exclamied, running over to the ashes of the village. Though the ashes were almost completely blown away from the strong winds, I could still tell where each hut once stood. I heard a low growl, and I turned. I was expecting to see a dog, but instead I saw dark clouds, rushing towards the island. My mother saw them too, for she rushed me over to the ship that had brought us back here.
"Come Ulape. We must leave on the ship before the storm hits," my mother ordered. I just thought of my studies at school.
"Mother, the winds are harsh. They'll knock us over into the sea," I pointed out.
"Nonsence! This ship was built to last through even the strongest of storms!" The captin yelled. He often bragged about the ship, so my fears were only hushed by my mother.
"Won-a-pa-lei, are we going to leave or not?" One of the othe crew men asked. Won-a-pa-lei was my mother's secert name. You see, everyone in our village has two names. The one we use everyday, and the other was our secert name that we very seldom used. For if we used our true name often, it would lose it's magic, and become worn out. My secert name is Lurai, for this was the name my mother wished to have instead of Karana. As we boarded the ship, the winds started to push against us, as if they were trying to help us get away from the storm. Fear still knotted in my stomach as we started to turn around the kelp beds. As the Island of the Blue Dolphins disapeared from my sight, I grew disapointed. I wished that I had stayed longer on the island, living like my mother did when she was younger. The roars of thunder told me something that I didn't want to hear.
My wish just might come true.
A/N: So what do you think? Sorry it was short, but I wanted to just write an intro this time. Trust me, the next chapter will be longer.
