Okay, don't be mad at me for not updating my other story, but this one just couldn't wait. A random idea popped into my brain cell and demanded to be posted. So, without further ado, here it is.
Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note, and if I did, both Light and L would still be driving each other crazy. Hee hee. :P

Pushing the Limits – Chapter 1
Your life was decided the moment you took your first breath.
"Contract or contractor?"
From the instant the metallic ring closed around your neck, your fate was sealed. When it shrank down, adjusting to your tiny body, life held but one meaning.
"Serve the contractors."
The ones without the ring had promise, potential to succeed. Protected from pain and misery by those who were laden with it, no problem was found in their society.
"Contracts are things, and should be treated appropriately."
As cold and metallic as the rings, that voice drilled into his head. Another government-run ad, instilling peace and serenity into our daily lives. Why did he bother to turn the radio on in the first place? Everything was garbage, either meaningless entertainment or government propaganda. This had been life for as long as he could remember, since the introduction of the Limiters. Rings that had been designed for military purposes, to force enemies to divulge secrets of their countries. However, the first use being so successful, before long it wasn't only being used for warfare. Laws had been created, demanding their introduction into the populace. You could move, but there wasn't a point. Limiters had made taking over the world so very easy.

The alarm was reminding him of the time. Job hunting was best right now, and food didn't grow in refrigerators. Of course, it was never easy to find a job, there were so many afterall. So many things, so many suppressed lives.
Settling a hand around his neck to adjust the cool contact of metal against his neck, he shook his head slightly. Brushing an annoying strand of chestnut hair from his eyes, he sighed. There wasn't near enough money nor time for a haircut, despite how badly he needed one.
Stepping out onto the grey, lifeless streets, the thing didn't catch his attention until he trod on it. Looking down, there was a dull orb lying there, blending into the sidewalk. The size of a marble, it was perfectly smooth to the touch.
"This is good. It might be worth something," mumbled the man, pocketing the small sphere. Continuing on to the nearest hiring station, the contract didn't spare a second thought to his find.
Behind, a shadow flitted effortlessly, following from corner to corner.

Yays, new story! This one probably won't be liked a lot, but tis a fun idea. Kinda reminds me of the beginning to a science fiction novel.
Okay, expect the updates to be extremely unstable, as they'll get pushed around depending on how Testing123 is coming. Currently, it isn't coming very much at all, so... yah. Anyone who's interested will need to wait some.
