Maths Class

It was that time of the day again. Mikan Sakura stared uncomprehendingly at the blackboard, bored out of her mind. As Jinno-sensei droned on about number systems and word problems, Mikan sneaked a peek at her friends from the corner of her eye. Hotaru was sitting ramrod straight, giving the teacher her full attention. Ruka was absently flicking his bunny's ears and looking affectionately at a bird perched on the window sill. Anna and Nonoko had a magazine open under their desks and were poring over it. Mochu was glaring at someone who was passing by the corridor outside the classroom and Koko was carefully sticking a wad of gum in a sleeping Sumire Shouda's hair.
Mikan slumped back in her seat and flipped the pages of her notebook open to the last page. Looking up to make sure that her formidable sensei was still lost in the world of integers and number lines, she scribbled:
Maths Class
I'm totally bored
Staring at the teacher with glazed eyes
Behind me, my friend snored
She paused and contemplatively chewed the tip of her pencil. Mikan set her pencil against the paper and hesitated, unsure of what to write next. Suddenly, another hand covered hers and jerked her pencil away. She looked up, startled and saw her partner leaning across her desk, reading what she had written so far.
"What are you doing, Natsume?" she hissed, glancing at her teacher to make sure that he wasn't looking in their direction.
He smirked and wrote:
Tapping her pencil, my partner sighs
Will this boring class ever end?
As she tried to fight back a smile, an idea formed in Mikan's head and she bent over her notebook.
Will we ever see daylight again?
Your turn now, Natsume.
Grinning, she passed the notebook to Natsume, who read what she had written and raised an eyebrow.
Just then Jinno-sensei, who had been scribbling away on the blackboard turned and glared at his class. They looked back at him innocently. As he turned towards the blackboard again and continued writing, the students gave sighs of relief.
"Imai!" he barked, catching all of them by surprise, "Solve this problem on the board! Now!"
Hotaru coolly made her way to the blackboard and Mikan gulped, terrified that she might be the next one called. But fortunately for her Jinno-sensei resumed his lecture after Hotaru got the answer right on her first try.
Natsume put the notebook on her desk and she read what he had written:
As the teacher asks a question
We try to blend, into the background to remain sane
Giggling, Mikan added the next three lines:
Crazy daydreams flit through my head
Superman, Harry Potter and Bella all make their presence felt
And I think longingly of my cozy bed
She shoved the notebook towards Natsume, who rolled his eyes and said, "You're a Twilight fan? Figures."
Before she could figure out exactly what he figured from her addiction to the sparkly vamp and friendly wolf book, Natsume picked up the pencil and started writing.
As he wrote, Mikan surreptitiously slid her chair closer to his and peered over his shoulder eagerly. Natsume's eyes glinted with amusement at her childish excitement.
Suddenly the bell rang and Jinno-sensei gathered his books, preparing to leave.
Mikan leaned across Natsume's desk and read:
The teacher's homework whip leaves me with mental welts
By the time the bell rings I'm almost dead
"You have such a morbid sense of humour, Natsume!" cried Mikan, laughing.
She penned the last lines of the poem and signed below it with a flourish.
"You can keep it," said Mikan, tearing the sheet out of her notebook and handing it to him. She picked up her bag and left for her next lesson.
Natsume looked down at the sheet and saw the words written by her:
Now that all that's said
Its time for the next class
And I'm totally bored again
Because you aren't in it alas!
