They came from out of nowhere, little lights that danced around his body, making him smile, delighting him. They were beautiful.
Beautiful, until he heard those frightening whispers. Voices that weren't really there, confusing him, misleading him, drawing blinds before his eyes. They told him lies, spoke to him of enemies everywhere.
One of them was louder than the others. A voice so loud it was almost tangible. So crystal clear and there that he almost mistook it for his own. There was vengeance in that voice, that entity, anger greater than he could possibly understand.
He shivered, knowing what would come next. The memories that weren't his, recollections of a love he could only dream of, hate, fear and, finally, the cold and bitter bite of death.
Baralai screamed as that ghost from the past took over and he was pushed out of his own mind once more.
