The scent hit him right when he walked in.

It was familiar, yet so foreign; he couldn't distinguish it.

It was spicy and sweet, tangy and bitter, sugary and delicious, overwhelming and satisfying. No words could explain what the scent of ginger and lemon could do to him.

"Look who decided to come home," he heard the familiar voice matching the scent perfectly say.

She was sitting on the kitchen counter, a mug of tea in her hands, smiling innocently.

He watched her warily, his blue eyes searching her face for any hidden danger, but all he could see was Katherine and all he could smell was ginger and lemons—it was making his head spin.

"What are you doing here?" he asked approaching her slowly, noticing the sweet and tangy scent getting stronger.

"I missed you," she said, pouting her lips and fluttering her doe brown eyes. "Katherine, why are you here?" he asked again, standing inches away from her, inhaling her scent, and boring his eyes into hers.

A shadow of fear crossed her features and she slowly looked away before saying, "Klaus is still after me, Stefan is after him, I just needed to hide out for a bit…" she trailed off and then looked up at him. "You're the only person in the whole world right now that I can trust," she said, keeping their gazes locked; her brown eyes were easily making him drown.

Her sentimental words would have held no meaning to him, if it hadn't been the truth. She had no one to depend on now, and the only person she could trust with her life was him, even though half of him really wanted her dead. But then again, another part of him just wanted to inhale her heady scent and ravish her completely. He nodded and watched as her tense body eased and she sipped her tea.

'What is that?" he asked peering over the mug to see the alluring liquid. "Tea," she answered simply. "I know that, but the smell...it's just so..." "What? Strong?" she asked while smirking. "No, well yes…it smells like you."

He decided to invade her space a bit more, since she was abruptly planning to sleep in his house, anyway. Pushing her knees apart, he stood between them and watched as some unguarded emotion flit across her face. "How do you…" she began, but Damon smirked and interrupted her.

"Don't be silly, Katherine, that was your signature scent, ginger and lemons, I could tell anywhere." She smiled, quiet genuinely, so unlike her usual smirk that he was caught off guard.

She offered him the mug and without thinking about her motives he took a sip. He was instantly hit with the tangy flavor of lemon and spicy and sweet ginger. And then he was struck with vivid memories. The scent of lemon and ginger on his pillows, the scent of lemon and ginger on his clothes, the scent of lemon and ginger filling his senses as he kissed soft, yet demanding lips.

Katherine watched his beautiful face intently, assessing the emotions flitting in his glimmering blue eyes. He caught her brown eyes for a second and then without another thought, he bent forward and captured her lips in a soft, passionate lemon and gingery kiss.
