It's Gonna Get A Little Weird

A small man waved a newspaper in passerby's faces. They ignored him, only eager to get out of the cold a snow. Nearby, other peddlers sold scarves, trinkets, and plush toys in the shape of stumps. The snow fell softly from the sky, tinting everything white and snowy. The man didn't care- he had a scoop. He had the news. They would care. They should care.

"Princess Star Butterfly is to announce something this evening- what will it be?" Discarded copies of the newspaper filled up the trash can nearby, leaving no room for emptied hot cocoa cups.

The Princess had been dating the same gentleman for years- maybe they were announcing an engagement? But, she had also postponed her coronation as Queen of Mewni after her 18th birthday, nearly a year ago. She was running out of time before she was forced to become Queen. Moon the Undaunted was merely 16 when she was crowned queen after her mother's death. She was prepared to abdicate the throne, as long as her daughter was willing to accept the crown. With only Glossarycks help through her troubles after her coronation, Queen Moon didn't seem to want the same for her daughter. She was there to help, to advise her daughter through thick and thin.

The hall was decorated in draping red tapestries, and every seat was filled with awaiting Mewmans. Queen Moon and King River stood before the court, with the head priest in between them. The Magic High Commission resided in the first row, watching the King and Queen's faces twitch in nervous anticipation. The choir of children stood in the corner, singing a hymn in a language from ages ago.

In the first few rows, other royal families sat, not having the audacity to decline a royal invitation. The Lucitors, the Pigeons, the Waterfolk, and the Spiderbites all sat on one side of the vast aisle, and on the other sat the Jaggy Royal Family, the Johansen family, Pony Heads, and even the Avarius family attended, attempting to look their best. They even invited the Diazes, who sat with the Magic High Commission.

Star let out a shaky breath, turning to her boyfriend of three years, "Are you ready?"

He could see her usually courageous eyes filled with dread and anxiety. "We've got this."

She smiled at him, "I've always hated this damned Grandma room," then she turned to double doors in front of them. "Here goes nothing."

Her took her arm in his and the guards in front of them opened the doors.

"Announcing; Princess Star Butterfly, escorted by her beau, Prince Marco Diaz."

/I had to, soz/

His brown eyes turned to her briefly as the made their way down the aisle. When they reached the platform where her parents stood, the King and Queen took their seats on either side of the main thrones they had sat on for years. Marco sat in the King's Throne, feeling a bit nervous to be one of the centers of attention. Tom gave him a small thumbs up from the second row.

"Princess Star Butterfly," The priest began, his voice thundering against the spacious room. "If you will."

She took a deep breath and stood before him, lowering her head to let him place a crown on her head. Star then rested her hand on the Mewman Tablet.

"Will you protect this land of Mewni, for the greater good, and govern it fairly?"

"I solemnly promise to do so."

"Will you use your wise judgement and the judgement of your advisors and the Queen before you to maintain this land as it were before you?"

"I swear, I shall."

"Will you protect all Mewmans against the forces of evil?"

"I will." She stated the last with every ounce of determination she had.

"If you will recite your oath."

Star turned to the people of her land, and looked across them as she let out the words, "I promise to uphold each of these oaths, to protect the crown of Mewni and the people of the land."

The priest held his hands up, "I now pronounce you, Queen Star of Mewni."

"QUEEN STAR OF MEWNI!" The citizens chanted back to the high priest, before applauding the queen.

The bew Queen and her prince danced first, then sat in their thrones as Moon and River danced. After Star and Marco had danced, the other royal families were free to ask either of them to dance.

Tom approached Star, bowing before her. "Queen Star, may I have this dance?"

She graciously took his hand and he led her to the floor. Hekapoo had been dancing with Marco, though the couple had just finished, bowing to each other before returning to the respective places.

"So, you're a Queen, now?" Tom smiled at her, his sharp teeth flashing.

"Yeah. It's weird. I used to be a little girl, fighting monsters and saving the world, now I'm a queen... Betrothed to a dashing prince."

Her demon friend chuckled. "The old me would have gotten so angry because of that.. But now I'm happy for both of you. Comgrats, Star."

Star smiled, "Thank you, Tom. It really means a lot to hear that from you. And I'm glad we ended things amicably."

"I did meet my wife because of you, Star." He nodded to Janna, who was sneakily stuffing pastries into her handbag. She noticed her husband and innocently waved at the pair.

"Technically, it was because of Marco." Star corrected. "You two are a perfect fit. Anywho, how's the baby?"

"As big as a mewmelon at this point. We're naming it Occulta if it's a girl, and Neko if it's a boy." He had suddenly taken on an excited tone. "I hope it has her eyes."

Star smiled, "Well, sir, I bit thee adieu," She curtsied to him, and he bowed in return.

"It was a pleasure."

She returned to her throne and turned to Marco. "My feet hurt so bad. I should have sneakily worn my boots under this stupid dress."

"You know, it was the dress your mother wore to her coronation, Star." River appeared before her, extending a hand to his daughter. "Come dance with your papa."

The new queen took his hand and followed him to the dance floor.

"I'm so very proud of how grown up you are, my dear."

She smiled at him and rested her hand on his shoulder, "Thank you, dad. I'm honestly surprised they'd want me to be queen when the erm, rightful heir is out there somewhere."

"Buttercup, our family has kept the kingdom functional for generations. Meteora is out there, yes, but as of right now, she'd still be too young to inherit the throne." After all, it had been three years.

Star sighed, "I still don't feel right about it, but I can only do so much in this situation."

River patted her back, "There, there, Star. Right now, you're the only one who can rule the kingdom. When the time comes, I'm sure you'll make the right decision."

"I guess I will."

Marco and Star walked through the halls of the castle- their castle. Marco was... royalty now. It was strange that this weird kid from earth with an obsessive personality and a passion for karate was a prince. Nearly a king. And it was all because of the blonde-haired beauty skipping along beside him.

"Star?"

"Uh, yeah, Marco?"

"I wouldn't blame you if you were having doubts, you know?"

Star stopped and turned to him. "What are you even talking about?"

"Us, Star. I'm just... Earth Turd. A nobody. You're an amazing queen, a fierce warrior... I'm a dude who knows karate."

She was silent, beckoning Marco to follow her into her bedroom.

"I guess I've got a point, huh? I love you, but I don't want you to get backlash and criticism for dating a common peasant."

She turned on him, "Oh, no no no, Marco. I chose you, and when have I ever been wrong?" She held her hand out to him, "I love you with all my heart, Marco. I always have."

Marco wrapped her in his arms, burying his face in her hair. "I love you more."

"Ohhhh, Marco... That's really cute that you think that." Star pressed her lips to his and pushed him down onto her bed. "I'll just have to show you how wrong you really are."
