There was something about her smile. Something that if not a memory, then reminiscent of a feeling or desire. He wasn't sure. But there was something there. The first spark of recognition? Probably not.
They'd locked the door. Left him in this shrine of a supposed past. His past they insisted. Hours of perusing the menagerie of objects had only confused him more. But still, he kept coming back to the picture of the woman.
Daniel set the photo of the dark haired beauty on the bed beside him. Closing his eyes he sunk into the pillow, exhausted. Exhausted from life, changes, worry, imbalance.
As he drifted into sleep he kept repeating the name the others called him. Daniel. Daniel. Daniel? The dark became lit by flickering firelight. "Dan'yel?" The voice, soft, light, and lyrical, drifted across his chest.
"Hmm?"
"You do not sleep?" Her words spoken in ancient dialect no long foreign to him held an invitation.
Rolling over to face her, he wrapped her warm body in his arms and hugged her closer. "You do not let me sleep." He kissed her forehead, the tip of her nose, and finally her delicate mouth.
Laughter bubbled up, seeping like flames of desire into him. She deepened the kiss. "Husband," mingled with laughter and sensuality as her lush body moved provocatively against his.
Husband. He loved the way she said it. Always with awe. Wonderment. Pride. Joy. Unconditional love.
Flipping over to his side Daniel's brows furrowed in sleep. He curled up tight as if to protect himself.
He was cradled into her body, surrounded by not only her flesh, but all of her essence, her love, strength…her life.
Something sinister slithered like a snake into his dream. "Sha're!" He called out – not in passion but in fear. "Sha're!?"
He awoke slowly, remembering nothing but her name and the knowledge that he had loved her very much.
