A good question

Disclaimer: I don't own "Fantastic beasts"

AN: I was watching Fantastic beasts and where to find them. When I came to the scene where Newt has to catch the Niffler in the jewelry, I asked myself, why he wouldn't just use Accio to begin with. I mean, instead he destroys half of the place and gets them caught.
This is my take on, what his reasons may have been.

„Newt, may I ask you something?" Jacob asked as soon, as Newt and himself were back down in the case.

They had just re-caught the Erumpment lady and the Niffler and were working on getting them both settled.

Newt looked at the other man questioningly. Jacob took that as a sign to carry on.

"Why didn't you use that spell on the Niffler from the beginning? You know the one that made it fly towards you?" He asked.

"You mean Accio," Newt said and seemed to contemplate the question.

Jacob carried on. "You know, I understand with the Erumpment," the no-maj chuckled lightly at the image of having the big animal flying towards the lanky wizard. "But with the Niffler it could have saved us a lot of trouble, don't you think?"

Newt nodded a little, in thought. "To some degree you are right. I didn't really think about it before, but I guess you could say there are many reasons for using magic only as a last way out. Firstly many of the beasts in here were mistreated by wizards. So if it isn't absolutely necessary, I don't use magic against them. I never know what bad memories that may trigger. It could completely destroy their trust in me."

Jacob nodded thoughtfully.

"The second reason may sound a bit silly, but it just seems unfair to use magic against them. While most of them have some magical properties, they can't consciously focus it, like we can. So, by using magic I would put them at a disadvantage. And I just don't like doing that. Thirdly…" Newt took a deep breath. "Well, I am scared to hurt them. Magic is wonderful, but can also be dangerous. If I grab the Niffler, the chances of him getting hurt are smaller."

"But couldn't you also hurt him, when you grab him?" Jacob wanted to know.

"I could," Newt admitted. "But if I use my hands I have more control on how much force I use. I can feel how much pressure I can apply without hurting him. With my magic I can only feel the strength I use to a small degree. Even though, I guess, there are people, who have more feeling in their magic. For them it may be different."

Jacob seemed fascinated by this new info and was about to ask more questions, when they heard someone knocking on the case.

Exchanging a glance, they went to take a look.

Thanks for reading. What do you think of Newt's reasons?
