I DO NOT OWN DEATH NOTE

Mello x Near

It was dark, and thundering quite badly when Matt and Mello decided that they would retire for the night. Matt gave Mello a slight pat on the shoulder, and a wave, before they parted. The blond sighed.

Due to Mello's room being redecorated, L had insisted that he temporarily stay with Near. Mello knew L was trying his hardest to get the two young boys to be friends. But Mello just couldn't get close to him. It was impossible.

Mello entered the bedroom. He couldn't see Near. Then again, Near was like a lamb in a field full of snow It was tough to see him in an all white room, when he himself wore all white. Mello looked for him. Under the bed, behind to door, frowning deeper as he couldn't find the boy.

He also noticed that the sheets from Near's bed had disappeared. Well, the quilt at least. Outside, thunder crashed loudly. That was when Mello heard it. A whimpering sob. A scared cry. He crossed to the wardrobe, and pulled the doors open. Hunched in the bottom was Near.

Well, he presumed it was Near.

It was a white sheet over something that was shivering slightly, and making gentle sobs. Mello crouched. He gripped the side of tee blanket, and pulled it up. Underneath was Near, scrunched in a ball, his face hidden in his lap. Mello thought he felt his heart stop as Near looked up.

He was crying.

Not messy, ugly tears where your face turns red, and you shudder and sob, and your nose runs, but delicate tears. One rolled down his marble white cheek, before falling onto his pyjamas. His mouth was in a firm line, trying to hide his emotions, but his scared eyes, brimming with tears, deceived him.

"Oh. Hello Mello." He sniffled, trying his hardest to wipe away the tears on his sleeve. He jumped as thunder drums rolled, lightning zapped, and the rain banged heavily against the glass. His hands jumped to cover his ears, his eyes squeezing closed. Mello slowly pushed the remainder of the blanket off of his rival, revealing his white hair, more messy that usual.

"Near...are you...afraid? Of thunder and lightning?" Mello asked. Near looked up at him, with a hard gaze. There was still fear. That was when Mello decided to act. Carefully, he manoeuvred himself so that he slid his arm under Near's legs, and behind the smaller boy's back, picking him up, out of the wardrobe. He placed the boy on the bed, before he retrieved the quilt. He sat on the bed, and pulled it round the back of him.

He then did something he never thought he'd do. He pulled Near into his lap, and pulled the blanket around the both, hugging the smaller boy to him. Near turned his head, to look at Mello. Carefully, he moved, so his feet were to Mello's left, and he sat with his head against Mello's chest, listening to the beating of his heart.

Mello stroked the boy's surprisingly soft hair, as another rumble came. Near flinched, but did not cry out. Mello smiled to himself. Near looked up. Hesitantly, he put one hand onto Mello's chest, and used it to push him up slightly. He put his lips lightly against Mello's, who gave a start.

Near was...kissing him? Mello's mind went numbed as he looked at the fluttering dark eyelashes that belonged to Near's closed eyes. He closed his eyes, placing his hand against Near's cheek, stroking it gently with his thumb. The two split from the kiss.

"Thank you Mihael." Near whispered softly.

"Don't mention it, Nate." Mello smiled back. Slowly, the younger boy fell to sleep, with what looked like a content, if not happy smile playing onto his lips.

"Goodnight, my Mello." He whispered, before he slipped into the dark oblivion of sleep. Mello smirked. He was Near's? No. Near was his. No. They belonged to each other. Mello kissed the boy's forehead, a little tentatively. It was odd, to feel like this, especially with Near. He would get used to it though.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore. I'll protect you, my Near."
