The Serenade layout at the Fighting Spirit fanlisting (all about Sasuke!) inspired me to write this. Go visit the site!
He played the flute.
It was her Uchiha Sasuke standing there, alone in the dark room. Only moonlight illuminated the room through an open window, and Sasuke's pale features.
His hair swirled gently in the breeze coming in through the window, and his obsidian eyes gazed unseeingly at the wall as his fingers danced on the wooden flute. Notes fluttered in the still air.
He was so absorbed in his music that he didn't notice Sakura staring at him from the open doorway.
Sakura had been at the Academy, leaving the library after several hours of intensely studying some books Tsunade had required her to. She didn't realize it was so late until she saw that the moon was high in the night sky and the Academy was deserted.
That was, until she heard the most beautiful music floating from a room down the hallway. Her first thought was that it might be a trap, but her curiosity led her down the hallway, to the open doorway.
Sakura turned her attention back to Sasuke when she realized that he had finished, and a silence hung, suspended, in the air. Sakura felt afraid to disturb this. She felt that Sasuke needed this time, and Sasuke wouldn't appreciate a visitor.
"Sakura, I know you're there." Sasuke's voice cut through the silence.
"Sasuke-kun," Sakura murmured.
Sasuke still stared at the moon, his face turned away from Sakura. "What are you doing here so late?" he asked. His voice was peaceful, not filled with the coldness it usually held.
"I was studying at the library," Sakura replied, "Until I heard music from down the hallway."
No response from Sasuke.
"It was beautiful music," Sakura continued. "I didn't know you played the flute."
Sasuke now held up the flute, inspecting it in the moonlight. "I started playing the flute back when I was a child. I taught myself how to, when I was only six. The music from my flute helped me cope after Itachi slaughtered my whole family."
A tone of bitterness and hatred crept into Sasuke's voice, and Sakura wanted to go over to him, to comfort him. But an odd sense of understanding kept her by the doorway.
"Playing my flute helps me forget about all of my troubles that I face. For the briefest period of time, the music I create seems to be all that keeps me sane."
Sakura's eyes softened at Sasuke's words. "Oh, Sasuke-kun…"
Sakura's eyes flew open, and her heart twisted when she realized that it had all been a dream. She was still in the dark library at the Academy. She had fallen asleep over reading the thick tome Tsunade had ordered her to.
Sakura yawned, and packed the book into her bag, before standing up and stretching. Well, that was as good of a dream as those get, Sakura thought, locking the library doors behind her. I need to go ask Sasuke if he plays the flute, sometime…
Sakura almost walked away before she heard music drifting down the hallway. Is that flute music? It can't be!
Nevertheless, Sakura crept closer to the doorway where the music emanated from. Standing in the doorway, she couldn't help but smile.
Inside the room, the window was open. A breeze stirred the air, and pale moonlight cast shadows on the empty walls.
Standing in the middle of the room and creating the most beautiful, yet sorrowful music with his wooden flute, was Sasuke.
A/N: Fitting title, no? The actual Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven is meant for piano, but let's pretend that Sasuke can play it on the flute, since Moonlight Sonata is a sad and sorrowful piece, and I think it reflects on Sasuke's hardships. And, the fact that Sasuke is playing the flute in a room with moonlight…hahaha.
Anyways, reviews shall be appreciated! And yes, flames will be used to make ramen…yummy.
