"Run the test again." Jeanine orders, resting her hands on her hips. Before her stood an Abnegation woman, who had the unfortunate task of administering the Aptitude Test to Jeanine's younger sister, Ingrid. The volunteer had tried to hide the truth from the Erudite leader and manually input the results, but Jeanine had been watching the entire time, giving the woman no choice but to reveal Ingrid's result: Divergent.
"I can't run the test again, we only have enough injections for each initiate to take the test once." The Abnegation woman says. "I'm sorry, but the test is never wrong, your sister's divergent."
"I want to speak with her, alone." Jeanine demands.
Without waiting for a reply she walks towards the exam room. The Abnegation volunteer doesn't follow her, knowing there was nothing she could do to stop Jeanine. Jeanine barges into the room slamming the door behind her. Her grey eyes narrow on the girl with curly blonde hair sitting on the exam chair.
"Jeanine?" Ingrid asks nervously. She knew her sister's sudden appearance couldn't be good. "What are you doing in here? Aren't you supposed to be monitoring the tests?"
"I am, which is why I found it interesting when your results were manually inputted." Jeanine says as she walks towards her sister, corning her in the chair. "Do you know what your results are?" She questions, grabbing her sister's chin. "Well, do you?"
Ingrid shakes her head, "She left before she told me."
"Divergent." Jeanine says, disgusted. "You're a divergent traitor, little sister."
"I can't be a traitor, I haven't betrayed anyone." Ingrid says, pushing her older sister's hand away.
"Divergent: tending to be different or develop in different directions. That's the definition of the word. As you well know, difference of any kind is not tolerated in any faction, let alone in mine. You're a traitor, your test results were inconclusive. Apparently you're a mix of Erudite, Amity, and Dauntless."
"That doesn't make any sense, everyone gets one result." Ingrid says, a confused expression on her face. "If I have three results how do I know where I belong?"
"You don't belong, that's the point." Jeanine replies harshly. "But you could be useful to me. Transfer to Dauntless then wait for further instructions."
"And if I don't?" Ingrid challenges.
"Then you'll become a lab rat, experimented on for the purposes of further understanding this Divergent...plague. The choice is clear, little sister. Go to Dauntless where you can at least be useful." Jeanine says. "Now go back to the Erudite table and act natural, I'll see you when you get home."
Jeanine turns and walks towards the exit of the room before sister can even open her mouth to say a word. Ingrid has a bad feeling in her gut, but she assumed that whatever she would be doing in Dauntless would be better than being experimented on. Ingrid's mind was spinning with questions, all of which she knew her sister either wouldn't have an answer to or wouldn't answer. Ingrid pushes herself off of the chair and stands, smoothing out her clothes before she exits the exam room, putting her game face on before facing her peers.
When Ingrid gets home the house is empty, as usual. Her parents had both died when she was younger, leaving her in the care of her older sister. Ingrid wished she had of been placed elsewhere, Jeanine was always away or busy with work and expected Ingrid to pick up the slack at home. With a sigh Ingrid goes straight to her room to think about her options. She knew the wisest thing to do would be to follow her sister's orders and transfer to Dauntless. But she couldn't help but wonder if she would be happier living the carefree life of Amity. I guess I'll never know she thinks glancing at the books that line her bookshelf. At least in Dauntless I'll be free to be me, Ingrid thinks, sure she was smart and enjoyed learning, she just hated doing it all of the time. Unlike her peers who never shut up about the newest bit of information, each one trying to outsmart the other. She tried to think of anyone who didn't fit the Erudie mold, but no one came to mind. I guess they're all Erudite or better at acting than I thought she thinks.
After a while Ingrid goes back downstairs and enters the kitchen of the house. She starts making dinner, knowing her sister will expect it ready when she gets home in an hour. I wonder what kind of experiments they would run on me Ingrid thinks with a shudder. She knew it wouldn't be good, whatever it was.
As she was putting the finishing touches on dinner Jeanine walks through the door and glances at her younger sister with disdain.
"Is dinner ready yet?" She asks impatiently.
Ingrid nods, "Of course it is."
"Don't talk back to me, you're lucky I'm being so lenient with you." Jeanine snaps as she sits down at the dining room table. Ingrid sighs and places a plate of food in front of her elder sister.
"What will I have to do in Dauntless?" Ingrid asks as she grabs her own plate and sits across from Jeanine at the table.
"You'll find out when you get there." Jeanine replies as she turns her attention to her food. "I don't answer to Divergent traitors, so be quiet and eat your dinner. Unless you'd like to go without?"
Ingrid shakes her head and starts eating her food, glaring at her plate. Jeanine had always been distant, which Ingrid was okay with because it gave her more freedom. But now she needed a sister, what was divergence? Why did it need to be studied? Why was she suddenly a traitor over something she couldn't control? She knew she would never find the answers here, not from Jeanine.
"I'm all finished. Can I go out? I want to visit Asher before the Choosing Ceremony tomorrow." Ingrid says, glancing at her sister hopefully.
"You can go clean up then go straight to your room. Traitors aren't allowed to roam the streets." Jeanine replies.
"I'm not a-" Ingrid starts, but stops after one look from her sister. "I'll start on the dishes."
"That's what I thought." Jeanine says as she stands. "Don't even bother trying to leave, I have security posted outside."
"Why do you need security?" Ingrid asks, knowing she didn't have to check to make sure that they were there, she knew her sister well enough. "Why is divergence such a threat? I mean, if Divergents are a combination of factions couldn't that be used to help interfaction relations?"
"Why are you still asking questions? Just go to your room, I'll clean up." Jeanine says irritated, tired of dealing with her younger sister.
"Why can't you just tell me?" Ingrid asks angrily, raising her voice. "You're making me out to be a monster but you won't even tell me your rationale, that's if you even have any! Maybe you're just threatened because divergence isn't something you understand, maybe-"
Jeanine cuts off her younger sister with a slap across the face, eliciting a gasp of pain from the teen. Ingrid looks at Jeanine shocked, but stays quiet.
"The next time I tell you to do something, I expect you to do it. I'm being generous enough by allowing you to go to Dauntless." Jeanine says, giving her sister a harsh look.
"Fine." Ingrid says then turns on her heel and walks to her room. When she gets to her room she slams the door shut behind her and lays on her. Ingrid squeezes her eyes shut, I'm not a traitor, she tells herself firmly.
