A Fine Line

Brooke Davis loved her best friend more than anything else in the world. (Of course she did; it was Peyton Sawyer, after all.)

And, why not? The two had been there for each other since they were kids. (When Peyton's mom died, Brooke never left her friend's side.)

They'd had each other's backs when they got to high school, too. (Brooke even fought off Peyton's would-be rapist at that college party that one time.)

The other's feelings were always the most important thing to these girls. (That's why Peyton broke off her affair with Lucas.)

This was true even if it was at the expense of their own happiness. (That's why Brooke couldn't take Lucas back.)

Sometimes, because they never wanted to hurt each other, it became necessary to receive permission regarding outside relationships. (Peyton assured Brooke that it was ok for her to start things up again with their mutual ex.)

Occasionally, a sacrifice had to be made on behalf of the other. (Peyton loved Lucas. Brooke had to let him go.)

Brooke and Peyton always instinctively knew when the other was in trouble. (Thank God, Brooke got there in time on prom night.)

Even when they grew up, one or the other would drop everything if they were needed. (Peyton was clearly depressed about Lucas. It only made sense to go home.)

Maybe it was wrong, but they always chose each other, under any circumstances. (Peyton and Lucas had an epic true love always kind of relationship. Lindsey would be able to come to terms with that without any handholding. Brooke had.)

What really said something about their epic friendship, though, was when they could sense the other's pain, no matter what. (It only took a couple of months for Peyton to realize that something had happened the night of her engagement. And those cookies had cheered Brooke right up.)

They did each other favors, too. (It was very thoughtful of Peyton to include Brooke in her wedding to Lucas.)

They never let the other be embarrassed, either. (Peyton made sure she didn't draw any attention to Brooke's tears on the altar. She never even glanced her way.)

And, most importantly, they loved each other the most. (Brooke had eyes only for her best friend all through the ceremony.)

Brooke Davis loved her best friend more than anything else in the world. (Of course she did; they were best friends.)

But, sometimes… (It was only for a second; it really shouldn't count.)

Sometimes, Brooke hated Peyton just a little bit more. (But, for that one little moment in time, just before his vows, Brooke had seen Lucas looking at her over his bride's shoulder. And, for just a second, she had looked back.)
