Checkup
"I'm excited, I always love getting to check on the babies." Jackie told Nick happily in the waiting room.
"Me too." Nick told her.
Once back with the doctor they did all the pre-ultrasound stuff and everything was normal.
Then came the ultrasound, the best part in Jackie's mind.
Both babies had a strong and normal heart beat and they were doing well.
"Can you tell if they are boys or girls?" Jackie asked.
"Nope, not yet."
"Can you tell if they are identical or fraternal?" Nick asked.
"No, there are only a few ways we can tell that before delivery."
"Oh, how can you tell?" Nick asked.
"A very small percentage of identical twins share a placenta, if they share one than they are identical, but your babies do not, they have their own, that doesn't mean they aren't identical that just means that we can't tell for sure yet."
"That's interesting, what's the other ways you can tell, you said there are a few ways?" Nick asked.
"Well if the babies are one of each, then they are automatically fraternal, but it's too early to tell what they are yet."
"So if they are both girls or both boys then they are identical?" Nick asked confusedly.
"No, not necessarily, you could have two girls or two boys and have them be fraternal. Meaning that Jackie released two eggs that both became girls, or both became boys."
"Oh, I see." Nick responded.
"There is one other way we can tell and that is by doing an amniocentesis but that carries a small risk to the babies and I don't like my patients to do that if it's not medically necessary, but it's up to Jackie."
"I don't want to do it if it's a risk, we can wait." Jackie said immediately.
"I thought that's what you'd say." Doctor Wilson said with a laugh.
"I think the chance of having twin boys are small if they aren't identical, with our history with girls and my history with all of my sisters, the chances that both are boys without them being identical is pretty slim." Nick said with a chuckle.
"You might be right there Nick, or you might be surprised you never know."
Nick and Jackie smiled at one another, whatever the babies turned out to be didn't matter as long as they were healthy.
The End!
