Two nights now, Mommy's brought home the strange lady with the pretty blonde hair like she were a Barbie . A lady I've seen before at Uncle Horatio's, but I still don't remember her name.
Two nights that I hear crying and the shower running even though they both look like they showered during the morning. The lady spends the night in Mommy's room and doesn't leave for either dinner or breakfast. She must go after I get on the bus to school, and while I'm learning math or science, I wonder why she comes over.
Two nights, they think I'm sleeping but I can hear Mommy crying for Daddy and the other lady saying things I was told when he died.
"Don't cry, baby. I know you miss him. I know."
That's what she says. That's what Abuela told me when they put him in the Earth. I was little. I thought he had only been sleeping, but when my uncle cried, I knew that Daddy wasn't coming back.
Mommy cried for days.
But she's happy now, except at night when the blonde lady comes over. And it's scary, because before the tears, she laughs and calls herself silly.
"Ray. Sweetie." Mommy calls. She's coming in the door.
Of course the lady is with her.
I look at them. They both look nervous, and my head says this cannot be anything good. My mom never looks like that unless something really bad is going to happen.
"Honey, this is Calleigh. You remember Calleigh, right?"
"You work with my uncle." I say, waiting for the news to come crashing down.
She nods, "I do. And, well, your mommy and I have something to tell you that's really important alright."
So I sit down on the couch instead of standing by the window. They both stand there, leaning from foot to foot until Mommy opens her mouth to talk to me and I will forever wish she didn't tell me what she does.
Because life wasn't complicated until the blonde lady came over for a third night.
