under the rain

"the sight of you standing all alone in the pouring rain saddens me."

She stands there by her lonesome, droplets of rainwater cascading down her long, cherry red hair, darkening her white shirt and her skinny jeans. She isn't moving; her head is looking down at the cement sidewalk, no emotion detectable on her pale face. A few cars drive by and dampen her completely as they race over the puddles pooled at the curb, treating her like she's invisible-and perhaps she is. To her, the world is silent and frozen right now; she is locked away in the coldest cell at the bottom of an inescapable abyss that she has been thrown into, and no one can save her.

She hears quiet footsteps tapping along the pavement, and she stiffens up a bit, ready to bolt it need be. The person, however, ignores her and moves along, protected from the downpour by a sterile white umbrella. She sniffles, and momentarily catches their attention, receiving a simple gaze before they continue their walk and move along, muttering things under their breath. She moves her foot just a bit, her Converse footwear making contact with a jagged gray stone.

Suddenly, she is not alone, and there is light filling her abyss. Warm arms wrap around her waist, and the face of someone nuzzles against her backside, her long mane of red hair. She is surprised but she accepts it, already knowing it is the white-haired heterochromatic boy who lights up the world, her life, for her, always there to make sure she doesn't sink into the black waters completely. For a slit second, the corners of her lips turn up into a smile before returning to the straight line it was in before. The boy releases her and the rain immediately stops pouring down onto her; he shields her with his lime green umbrella, a joyous grin on his face.

For now, she is safe, safe as long as he is there, and honestly, that is all that matters to her.

She leaves the rain, her sorrows, her cold cell behind, basking in the warm, comforting, understanding silence that her dearest friend always offered whenever he was in her line of sight.

end.
