Disclaimer: I've checked thoroughly, asking everyone I know, and they're pretty sure I don't own any of this.
A/N: Just a drabble-ish piece. Based on something that happened in 6.03. So, yeah, spoilers for that episode!
READING BETWEEN THE LINES
By: MistWraith
Sam stood at the motel window, a Styrofoam cup of coffee in one hand. He watched the battered neon sign, standing where the parking lot asphalt met the roadway, struggle to light the word "vacancy"; it had already given up the ghost when it came to making the motel's name at all visible. And he watched his brother lean against the Impala and stare off into the night.
Despite everything else that had happened that day-from Balthazar's escape with who knew how many weapons of Heavenly destruction, to Raphael's temporary loss of vessel (Sam was pretty sure the archangel intended to find a new vessel in very short order) to Dean's shock (and then disappointment) at Sam's willingness to go along with Castiel's method of getting information from Aaron—only one scene played over and over in his mind.
He suspected it was weighing on his brother as well. Dean was no fool and was just as adept as he was at picking up on things left unsaid. Everything had been moving pretty quickly earlier but now, with nothing angelic on the radar, there was time to really think about that moment in the motel room, when Cas was getting ready to do the ritual to call Balthazar. Using Dean's blood because he needed human blood and he wasn't human.
Looking only at Dean when he was saying that. Leaving the unspoken words just hanging in the air for anyone who wanted to see them.
You're the only human in the room, Dean.
Sometimes, he admitted to himself he wasn't human anymore.
Sometimes, he even wished he still cared.
A/N: In that one scene, there just seemed to me to be some subtext going on in that scene, and it made me want to write something on it. Hope you found it interesting. Please let me know what you think
