At first it's easy, because he is just a boy.
The boy has a name, she learns- Akihito Kanbara. But a name isn't much when you don't have anything to put behind it, and Akihito Kanbara was just a boy who is fated to die. Unfortunate circumstances, but he's a youmu and she's a Spirit World Warrior and really, there was never any other way for this to go.
He is just a photograph of a person she has never met and doesn't really care to. She will never know him because their first meeting will involve a swipe of her blade and the immortal boy crumpling to the ground, never to get back up again.
Except that doesn't happen.
She meets him and stabs him and he doesn't die. She follows him and then avoids him and he doesn't let up. She pushes herself away, because he has to die.
Except he won't.
Because it's too late. Somehow, she started to care about him. That idiot Senpai with a thing for glasses is starting to look less like a boy and more like her friend.
He's a dummy, a pervert, and has an unhealthy, 'maybe-you-should-go-see-a-doctor-about-that' obsession with glasses. Akihito pokes his nose into anything and everything, even when he shouldn't- he groans too much, he eats too little, he always wears those stupid sweater vests and bites his nails when he's nervous. He teases her whenever he gets the chance and turns the pages of books way too loudly. Akihito Kanbara won't tell her anything about his past but expects her to tell him about hers. He snorts when he laughs, tans better than her in the summer, and looks good in absolutely everything.
Mirai can't stand it but she just can't get away.
He is the first person to treat her like a girl, like a friend- the first one since Yui that didn't have some ulterior motive to knowing her or flinch when she pulled out her sword. And for all his faults, he is sweet and dorky and smart and listens to her talk. Akihito Kanbara takes her to movies and spends money to buy her food and goes along with her crazy plans. He does all he can to help her, listens to her sing along to Disney movies with a smile on his face, and tells her she's beautiful.
Akihito Kanbara is just a boy - but now, Mirai realizes, that Akihito Kanbara is the boy she has fallen for.
i'm one of the admins running akirai week on tumblr, so this is my submission for the first day- the prompt i used was 'falling'!
i'm actually not that in love with how it turned out, but here we are, so. i started a lot of ideas for this prompt but nothing was really clicking so i just went with what i originally had- aka this little fic.
