So my little "200 words or fewer" challenge was all in good fun, and I appreciate everyone who was willing to play the game. I think we all got to experience a few laughs at the expense of our favorite characters.
Oddly enough, though, the brevity was intriguing, and I thought it might be a challenge to write some even shorter form pieces (not that anything I write is ever very long). So in true fanfiction spirit, I present a collection of "Drabbles" - each exactly 100 words and inspired by some of my favorite #ShOliver moments.
The porch swing was silent, as only a new one can be, and they sat there swaying in the night air. After they each acknowledged the coming of spring, there wasn't much left to say. Both knew that the new door that was opening for them wouldn't be walked through soon or with haste.
Oliver took another opportunity to glance at Shane as she sat next to him. She was beautiful sitting there with her golden hair reflecting in the moonlight. He would tell her one day, and he would hold her hand and call her by her first name.
"Give me your hand."
"What?"
"Don't look down."
The simple phrase got Shane's attention, and she lifted her eyes to meet his. In that moment she knew she would follow him to the ends of the earth if he asked, and it frightened her a bit. The dance was still a formidable task, but she knew she could lean on his strong frame for support. As he pulled her closer to him after the turn, she swore she could feel his smile. That was new...and exhilarating...and wonderful. She could grow accustomed to being the reason that smile appeared.
"It is a date."
He didn't hesitate this time. He didn't think. He looked into her eyes and said what he felt and what he meant, and he was rewarded with the brightest smile he had ever seen. It was intoxicating and overwhelming, and she was beautiful. This was by far the most clarity he had felt in regards to his relationship with Shane since that morning spent on her porch. He couldn't help but continue to stare at her until she broke the silence.
"Speaking of second chances…"
Did she just ask about her hair? And he's mystified again.
Oliver assured her he had prayed already and then pulled her in closely. It was times like these when life really was simple for him. Shane was hurting, and he would do anything to alleviate that pain. He would hold her forever if that's what it took.
He didn't think in that moment of his wayward wife or the opinions of others. He didn't think of Shane's reputation or his own complicated past. He thought only of her and whispered quietly to her as she sobbed.
"It's okay."
He would make sure of it. His road ended where she was.
"How dare you."
The anger he felt in that moment was unmatched by any he had felt in some time. Perhaps he had been this upset at his father. Perhaps at Holly. But this was still somehow different. She had betrayed him. Had betrayed the trust he had placed in her by sharing his story.
He thought he had found a friend, someone who despite their differences understood him. He couldn't have been more wrong. She looked at him in a way that was unlike anything he had ever experienced. This is how friends behave?
"You may presume too much."
