Gilbert Blythe fingered the simple diamond ring he held in his hand. He hoped he would do this right. He had to do this right. Gilbert was going to propose to Anne today. The only other person who knew about this ( although he would have told Diana Wright, but she would have told Anne) was Marilla. It was settled. He would sneak into the school house while she was telling her students good bye for the summer.

later that afternoon...

A chourus of "good bye Miss Shirley" rang though the air until Anne entered the school house.

" Hello, Miss Shirley." smiled Gilbert.

" Gilbert Bythe, you scared me half to death!" exclaimed Anne breathlessly.

" I'm Sorry, Anne. I have something I think I should run by you. " said Gil

" Oh what is it ,Gil?" questioned Anne.

He got down on one knee and said:

" Anne, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. From the moment I saw you at that picnic I knew that you were the only girl for me. Anne Shirley will you marry me?"

By this time tears were streaming down Anne's face and her smile was as bright as the sun.

" Yes, Gilbert, I will marry you!" she replied happiliy.

His smile now mirrored hers as he stood up and placed the ring on her finger. Then he kissed her very happily.

" Do Marilla and Diana know?" asked Anne after they had broken the kiss.

" Well, Marilla knows. I didn't tell Diana because I thought she might tell you." said Gil.

" Diana is at Green Gables waiting for me. Shall we go tell her now?" asked Anne

" Of Course we can, Carrots. smiled Gil.

Anne laughed at the memory and Gil joined in as they walked hand in hand back to Green Gables to share their most wonderful news.
