"I mean, what sort of Captain is she! It's her fault we are in the middle of nowhere, facing a ridiculously long journey home and facing all types of threats", Adam exclaimed.
Donna felt the need to step in, "Come on Adan, be fair to her. She is respecting the prime directive after all and that takes a lot of courage I wouldn't call it courage ". "I wouldn't call it courage Don", Adam retorted, "she's used it as an excuse for her actions and to cover up the fact she has no idea to deal with dilemmas. It was easier for her to hide behind regulations than it was to make an actual controversial decision". Donna sighed, thinking she would try and convince him one more time even though she sounded like a broken record.
"Well that's what you think. I, and our fellow graduates, think that it takes guts to take the hard option and respect the ethos of Starfleet, even though you know your decision could adversely affect the crew. Also, for the most part, the crew are walking taller and are proud to call Janeway their Captain. A Captain who upholds the ethos and aims of Starfleet. A Captain who socialises with her crew rather than hide away in her quarters. Think about it. For a ship with no counsellor on board we make a pretty good family". "Family"? Adam questioned, "I don't need a family and I don't want to be surrounded by the same faces for however many years, what's the point?" The point, Donna thought, there were plenty of points, now it was up to her to explain them. "The point is having people saying hello to you every day in the mess, both by similar ranks and senior officers. The point is sharing each other's holodeck programs and having some fun with them. The point is making a close knit team who can cover you if you're having a bad day".
"Ok you have a point", Adam admitted, "It's just I joined Starfleet to see the stars and do some time on research stations so I can put it on my resume. Now I'm facing a long haul with no end in sight".
"Well you're certainly going to see the stars", Donna replied, "and I will turn you into an explorer if it's the last thing I do! We're going to have so many stories to tell and will encounter all different species, it will blow your mind. You'll definitely have some experiences to draw on when we get home. And we will get home one day Adam but for now, let's get to our shift…bro'".
