Prologue: A Twist of Fate
(Author's Note: Okay! I've cleared up a little time in my life to start writing again…so, I've decided to go through, one by one, and start finishing all my current stories. Then, I'll work on pre-writing some new ideas, but that's not important now. I've re-written this prologue and I'm going to tweak the first chapter next. So, give it a read and keep an eye out for Chapter Two! As always, I hope you enjoy!)
*Kagome's POV*
I sighed as I walked over to my best friend. I'd just gotten the worse news ever, and I didn't know how to tell him.
"Hey, Kaggies!"
He ran up to hug me, but stopped when he saw my face. He put his hands on my shoulders.
"What's wrong? Whose ass do I need to kick?"
That was one of the things I loved most about Inuyasha. He was always looking out for me. Any time I needed him, he was there. We'd known each other for ten years. When I was a year old, my father passed away in a car accident. To make a little extra money, Mom started babysitting Inuyasha and his older brother. Inu was only three, then. We used to hate each other, but when I was five, Tomiko Hashiki pushed me down and Inuyasha tried to beat him up. Since then, we were best friends. I looked into his eyes and saw the worry. I took a deep breath and decided to just bite the bullet.
"Mom got a better job offer."
"That's great! What's the problem?"
"We have to move."
"Like to a different school?"
"Like to Kyoto."
"What?! When?"
I felt like I was gonna cry.
"Tomorrow, after school."
"What?! How can you just leave?!"
"I don't want to! I tried to make Mom stay, but she said we have to go. She said we might be able to move back in a few years."
"A few years?! This is crazy!"
"I don't wanna go, Inu!"
I couldn't hold it together anymore. I broke down and the tears started flowing. He looked at me and sighed. I felt him wrap me in a hug.
"Shhhh. Don't cry, Kaggies. It'll be ok."
"How?!"
"We'll talk every day. Maybe we can visit sometimes. And when you do move back, I'll be here."
"I don't wanna lose you. You're my best friend."
"And you're mine. You won't lose me."
"Promise?"
"I promise. Hey, wanna stay at my house tonight?"
"Yeah! I'll call Mom when we get there."
"It's a deal. Now, let's get to class."
I nodded and walked into school with him. After class, I rode home with Yash and called Mom. We spent most of the night playing video games and eating junk food. Everything was great, until the next morning. I woke up with a knot in my stomach. After today, I wouldn't see Inu anymore. We wouldn't get to hang out like this anymore. I tried not to cry as I got dressed and went to school. After class, I waited at the front entrance for Inu. He came walking up right on time. We said nothing as we walked to the carpool area. I noticed Mom was already waiting. Inu chuckled nervously.
"Boy, Auntie doesn't waste any time, does she?"
"No, she does not."
"Well, I guess this is it, huh?"
"Unfortunately."
I was fighting tears again.
"I don't wanna say goodbye, Inu. How can I say it?"
"Don't. Just say till next time."
"Till next time, Inu. Like that?"
He laughed.
"Yeah, like that. Till next time, Kaggies."
He wrapped me in a hug and I almost lost it. I felt safe and warm and I never wanted it to end. That's when I heard Mom honk the horn. I sighed and pulled back.
"I guess that means I gotta go now."
"Guess so."
I looked at him. Now, it was him fighting tears. He was trying not to show it, but I knew. I smiled.
"It'll be ok. We'll talk every day, right, Inu?"
"Right."
"Good. Till next time."
"Till next time. I love you, Kaggies."
It was just a whisper, but I heard him.
"I love you, too."
I turned and walked to the car with tears streaming down my face. As Mom pulled out, I watched Inu. I could see tears on his cheeks. I remember him never taking his eyes off that car.
(Author's Note: So, how was it? Leave me a review and lemme know!)
