CAN YOU LOVE ME?
It was a cold December's morning when a long, black limo pulled up in front wrought iron gates. A man waited close to the entrance to open the door and allow the passengers the privilege of going inside. The limo curved and swerved through acres of trees, tennis courts, fountains, and colorful shrubbery boasting wealth and upper crust society. The crunching noise being the only sound that is heard inside the car causes an echo extending all the way to front doors of a large Victorian Style mansion. Once the limo stopped, the female passenger inside the vehicle looked to her left to the timid teenage boy nervously playing with his hands in an effort to not look outside the tinted windows. The woman smiled sadly. So much horrible circumstances had befallen the boy and it was so unjust it was sickening to think about. Clearing her throat, she began to speak to him.
"Seeley?" she said softly. With haunted, terrified brown eyes he looked at her before looking back down at his palms. "It's time to go inside now, dear. Your Uncle Jack is waiting to meet you."
He seemed to mull it over for a minute before jerkily nodding his head and pushing his way along the seat to get out. A tall man who strangely looked a lot like the other man at the gate opened the limo door and escorted the teenage boy and the woman into the house.
The woman took their long trip to the designated meeting room to observe the surroundings in which this boy would be living in. It was a large mansion, if large was an adequate adjective to describe exactly how big it was, with enormous grand marble staircases lined from one end on the walls to the other with beautifully large paintings of deceased family or possibly portraits of famous royalty. The colors of the main foyer were dark blues, purples, greens, and reds. The very floor they were walking on appeared to be travertine tiles and hand scratched hickory wood of the richest color. The house oozed wealth and generations of well to do people living here. For her it was awe striking, for the boy it was unsettling.
He tried his best to only look at his feet and not let the monstrosity of the place he was forced to live in now not swallow him whole, but it was hard to do when the expressiveness of everything even seeped into the breath you take in. It was scary for Seeley to think he may have to be in charge of cleaning or taking care of this place. After all, he was good for nothing else as many others had told him. He had to earn his keep, they would say. Why would this place be at all different? He was terrified he would break something valuable and have to pay for it. Or worse get punished and have to deal with the pain while fixing it or doing more chores. No, he was not at ease here. No not at all.
"Master Hodgins is right in there, Miss. He has been expecting his nephew and you for quite some time. Can I offer you some tea? You must be famished after the train from Pittsburg?" the butler said quickly while taking the woman's coat.
"Oh no, that's alright. I'm fine. Seeley, however, must be parched. Seeley? Would you like anything?" she asked while fixing her dress to be presentable.
He shook his head and avoided eye contact. No mustn't ask for anything, lest he has to pay for it later.
"Very well then, go on in and ring me if the need arises. Oh and welcome home Master Seeley Booth." The butler said with a warm smile. Seeley looked at him in shock.
"Master?" he whispered not realizing it. The butler shook his head yes and Seeley blushed for his foolishness in speaking without permission. He lowered his head and followed behind the woman into the room hoping against all odds that maybe this place won't be as cruel as his other places have been. He wasn't asking to be served like a prince. No, he would never expect that. He just wanted someplace that wouldn't hurt him all of the time. He wasn't naïve enough to expect that from life anymore, oh no, quite the contrary. He knew his place; but that didn't mean that somewhere inside he wished he could have a place that loved him and really loved him.
"Mr. Hodgins?" the woman asks a man standing next to a great window overlooking golf greens. He turns exposing his crystal blue eyes and red as fire hair wearing a smile that could warm the hearts of the heartless. Seeley is again shocked. He doesn't look mean and scary, but neither did his father at times. This man supposedly deemed his uncle was wearing a leather belt… Yes, Seeley must be cautious and never look him in the eyes. He may upset him.
"Ah, Miss Montenegro! I have been expecting you!" he says while extending his hand and shaking hers in a companionship fashion. "How was your train ride?"
"Long and gave us lots of cramps." She said tiredly before looking over to Seeley who taking interest in his shoes. "Seeley? Would you like to meet your uncle?"
He briefly looked her way before shyly walking forward and extending his hand for Jack to shake. "Hello, Seeley!" Jack greeted warmly. "How was the train for you, son?"
"Good, sir." He said respectful before going back behind Miss Montenegro. She sighed in disappointment. He was so skittish, so scared of everything including his shadow. It was heartbreaking. All through the train ride, and even before she had done anything and everything to get him to open up, but he is just so closed off and wary of everything around him.
"Well, that's delightful! I'm glad to hear it. I hope you will enjoy yourself here in Richmond, Virginia. I know it's not Pittsburg, but we do have our fair share of things to see and do. Maybe you and I can have some fun together hmm?"
Seeley looked up terrified. "Fun?" he whimpered. His eyes became glossy; fun always implied pain for him. It was always "fun" to hear Seeley scream; it was always "fun" to watch Seeley cry; it was always "fun" to see how much Seeley could handle. Fun was never fun for him.
Jack caught onto to the boy's change in demeanor and took back what he said immediately. "I mean fun like in play some golf, or go horseback riding…maybe play some rugby? Those types of fun things. A favorite "fun" thing for me to do is play chess. Do you enjoy that game?" he asked worried he already sent his nephew emotionally away from him without even beginning.
"I-I…" he stopped. Does he like chess? "I-umm-I have never p-played, Mr. Hodgins."
"Oh well, we will have to remedy that. And do call me Uncle Jack, Jack, or just Uncle. No need to call me Mr. anything. I'm just your uncle, son."
"I ap-apologize, Uncle Jack." He sheepishly took another step unconsciously.
"No need for that. Please, the both of you sit! Make yourselves comfortable! I have plenty of space here in the parlor!"
"Thank you, Mr. Hodgins. You are quite gracious." Miss Montenegro said with a flick of dark brown hair and a rub of well powdered olive colored nose. She let her coffee stained eyes graze the teenager she transported here in worry. Was he already regressing before the placement even got started.
"Just Jack if you will, Miss Montenegro." He said while fixing himself a glass of water.
"Oh, well then, Jack, just Angela, if it pleases." She replied with a smile.
"Oh it does." He said under his breath. He turned back around and sat across from Seeley to his discomfort. He didn't like having to be near anybody unnecessarily. It usually meant putting himself in easy reach for something to happen. He scooted himself back a couple of inches and let his small, malnourished leg cross over the other while using his hand to wipe off imaginary dirt. He sniffed. He felt slightly closed in with Miss Montenegro on one side and Uncle Jack right in front of him. He didn't like feeling this closed in. There was no means for escape if necessary. He had to stand up to be able breathe.
"Are you alright?" Jack asked his nephew. He shook his head no after a few moments hesitation to Jack's confusion. "What's wrong, Seeley?"
He sniffed again before quickly saying, "Closter phobic…s-sir, I mean, Uncle Jack."
Jack's eyes widened before getting up to move out of the boy's way. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know. Is this better?"
Seeley briefly looked up at him before jerkily nodding a yes and doing everything in his power to sink and become one with the pillows. "The train ride must have been hard for you then?" Jack ventured.
"A little, I guess." He responded.
Jack sighed; this was going to be a long process getting his nephew to trust him. "So, Angela, how long have you been Seeley's case worker?"
"Hmm? Oh, for about three months…since he entered into the system, Jack." She said softly before patting Seeley's hand gently. He looked at her with wary brown eyes, before slowly scooting closer to her. She smiled, she was glad that after all this time she could get him to trust her some.
"Ah, I see. Well, he has come to the right place." Jack gave Seeley a sympathetic smile. He was going to do everything in his power to make this boy feel safe again. Seeley didn't acknowledge Jack, just hesitantly rested his brown haired head on Angela's shoulder with a sniffle. Unconsciously she began stroking his locks to settle him down, while Jack sat stunned that the boy would allow her to do that. He cleared his throat however to cover his guppy expression and continued. "I have fought for the last four months to get custody of you Seeley. I have really wanted to have you here where I can make sure nothing bad ever happens to you again. I have already enrolled you into a Prep School that's not too far from here. I have been looking over your transcripts and I see you have been having some struggles, so I asked one of my associates' kids to come over and lend assistance. I really do hope you love it here, Seeley." Jack told him with a smile before standing and saying, "You look exhausted though. Olivia, my maid, can show you to your room. I am not familiar with your interests so it's a little plain right now, but if you tell me when I can send you out with someone and they can help you decorate it to your liking."
Seeley looked at him for second before saying, "What do I have to do?" he sounded so small and unsure of himself Angela had to suck in a breath to keep tears from falling. His case has been the first ever that strikes every heartstring in one pluck. She dropped a kiss on his forehead and nuzzled his hair a little to give him some reassurance.
Jack looked at him contemplating all of the meanings behind those simple words. This boy wasn't just ask what he had to do, he was asking what he had to do to not get in trouble and not get beaten to a bloody pulp. Jack suppressed the urge to sigh in sadness. Instead he crouched before his teenaged nephew and sweetly said, "I don't expect you to do anything to stay here, Seeley. If you make mistakes, I won't lay a hand on you in anger ever, son. Ever. You are safe here. Forever and always. I love you. You are my nephew, and I am your uncle, and together we are going to make this work. Okay?" When he finished he searched for the boys eyes.
Seeley looked to be in the brink of tears. He wanted so badly to hug his uncle right then, but he just wasn't ready. Was he telling the truth? Was he safe here? He couldn't tell right now. He would have to watch and observe. So instead he nodded shakily and whispered, "Okay."
Jack smiled then called for Olivia, giving strict instructions to let the boy rest and to have the cooks prepare dinner for three. Angela looked at him quizzically but he said that since she had done such a great job caring for his boy in his absence it was the least he could do. She smiled lightly before Seeley slowly walked behind Olivia into his room.
Jack sighed finally and heavily. It had taken sixteen years to get that boy away from his sister and her awful husband and foster care. Now that he was finally where he belonged, Jack was going to show the boy the love he has deserved his whole life. "I hope he'll let me." He whispered with a tear traveling his cheek to the floor.
Seeley looked back to Angela and Jack mirroring a little boy who was going into a school by themselves for the first time. His eyes were dark brown with worry, and his forehead was creased in indecision but he kept going. Jack said he was safe, he hoped he was right.

Two Weeks Later
"Seeley, time to wake up." Olivia said to the boy. She smiled when she heard a faint grumble. 'Leave it to teenagers' she thought fondly. "Come along now, you're friend Bones is already downstairs waiting for you."
"Okay." He whispered and began getting out of bed. "Tell her I'll be there in a minute, Olivia, ma'am."
She smiled again. "I do love your politeness, Seeley. It is so refreshing." She said before walking off.
He sighed. Life had changed so much in the past two weeks. He had made a few friends, though he doesn't say much for fear of offending them, he began to decorate his room, he slowly began doing things with his uncle. He wasn't entirely comfortable yet here, he was still waiting for the other shoe to drop, but he could say that he was now at least familiar with his surroundings in a fond manner. Slowly he stripped out of his night things and avoided putting too much pressure on his side. It still hurt from his last foster home when they decided that because he dropped the plate he deserved…he wasn't going to go here. Carefully he made his way to his ensuite bathroom and turned on the shower. Once it was nice and lukewarm he let the water and soap bubble wash away his nightmare. Suddenly he remembered something from it-
*A low ting-ting-toe ting-ting-toe noise sounded through the hall. Seeley sat with his legs tucked near his chest trying his best to not be noticed inside his room. If he could, he would stop breathing in order to be completely silent and escape his fate. He whimpered against his will, he was coming for him. He was going to get it bad this time.*
Seeley gasped and put his hand to the wall. "It's just a dream. It's just a dream. He's gone. It's just a dream." He said repeatedly before turning off the shower and rubbing his face with a towel. "It's just a dream, Seeley. Dad's gone. He can't hurt you." He told himself.
"No but I can." A voice in th back of his mid taunted. Seeley jumped. That voice. The voice of the man he thought was his friend. "Oh come on, I am your friend. Let's have fun, Seeley!" he sneered and Seeley whimpered before running back into hi bedroom. "Leave me alone!" he cried. "It's not real. It's not real. It's not real."
"Oh but I was real, Seeley. I was very real when you screamed for me. Remember? I was very real when I pounded into you mercilessly over and over and-…"
"Seeley, it's Bones, You ready?" she asked through the door interrupting his thoughts.
"Yes!" he squeaked. "I mean in a moment. I'll be right there." He ripped through his closet and found his clothes before bolting out of the room. 'It's not real.' He reminded himself. 'It's not real.'
