"S'not fair. I never got to know her." Sometimes a kid just needs his mom. Luckily Dean is the next best thing.

I'm just sitting here, watching season 4 as I write this and it's really making me miss the good ol' days. Just for that, here's a wee!Chester fic for you all. Also, happy belated Mother's Day to all you moms out there.

Chasing Raindrops from the Past

Dean watches Sam race through the door, cheeks covered in tear tracks.

"Sammy?"

"I'm a-asposed to write something 'bout Mom for school an-and I, uh..."

Lost for words, Dean holds his brother close while Sam sobs into his chest.

"S'not fair," he whispers between sniffles. "I never got to know her."

And he's right, it isn't fair. His childhood is counting raindrops on car windows while Dean's was sandwiches with the crusts cut off. Nothing he can do will change that.

But damn if he won't try.

He hates how Sam's eyes shine with gratitude as he offers stories of a mother Sam doesn't remember.

"Mom was beautiful," he says. "Smart, strong, funny. Always laughing." But his words are weak, not enough.

So he recounts tales of family picnics, a week spent in Florida, Mary's infinite patience when all Dean did was ride Space Mountain. He reads the same bedtime story Mary once did and hums the same lullaby she'd sing over Sam's crib.

The next morning Dean catches sight of Sam's paper on the table. Smiles at the first sentence.

The best memory I have of my mom is when my big brother told me all about her.
