A/N: This was also written for alissomora. It's the first time I've ever written anything that isn't Harry Potter so I'm a bit nervous about it. It's not brilliant, just a little "written-down version" of one of my favourite scenes from Dean's POV, but I wanted my first Supernatural fic to be for her. The dialogue is from the season finale of Supernatural Season 2 (All Hell Breaks Loose).
Dean watched, frozen, as Jake stepped back. He watched as Sam's face contorted with pain and he dropped to his knees. Suddenly, everything was moving at high-speed, but his legs didn't seem to be working fast enough when he moved forwards to catch Sam. He barely noticed Bobby running after the bastard…
"It's not even that bad," Dean told Sam, trying to ignore the sick feeling in his stomach at the sight of the blood on his hand. His heart was speeding in his chest. He couldn't ever remember being this scared.
"I'm gunna take care of you," he murmured, holding Sam's head up. "I got you. That's my job, right? To take care of my pain-in-the-ass little brother?"
Sam's eyes closed and he went limp in Dean's arms.
Kneeling on the ground, clutching his baby brother to him, Dean couldn't believe that after all they'd been through it had finally happened. His greatest fear had finally been realised.
It was his job to protect Sam. He'd failed his dad, but worst of all, he'd failed Sammy.
It wasn't the end. It couldn't be. Dean was going to fix this. No matter what it was going to take, he'd do it, he'd save Sammy.
Without him, Dean's life meant nothing.
