Disclaimer: I may have read all three books of the Divergent trilogy twice through, but I don't own any of it. This fic is canon-compliant, which means it does not directly contradict any aspect of canon.
Tobias stirred in his sleep, gradually waking up from the most restful sleep he'd had in a while. Opening his eyes, he couldn't suppress the joy he felt at the sight of Tris lying draped over him. He wouldn't wake her, not yet - maybe not ever. He just wanted to lie there awake underneath her, listening to her calm, gentle breaths. His heart soared as a smile drifted to her lips, probably from whatever she was dreaming.
He could spend the rest of his life like this, lost in the sweet surrender of his love. If only this moment would last forever... but despite the fact he knew it would end - or maybe because he knew it would end - he treasured every moment he spent with her.
Lying this close, he could feel her heart beating against his. No, he thought, not against; her heart was beating with his. Even as he thought this, Tris let out a quiet moan of contentment without coming to consciousness. In spite of himself, Tobias felt a twinge of jealousy that a dream could draw that sound from her - unless it was him she was dreaming of, then it was okay.
He couldn't stop himself from kissing her eyes then. God, he prayed silently, thank you so much for bringing us together. There were so many things that had stood in their way, so many times that she might have been lost to him, but - whether through providence or destiny - they were still here.
He simply didn't want to miss one smile, one kiss; he just wanted to be right here with her, just like this. He wanted to hold her close, feel her heart so close to his, and stay there in that moment for the rest of time. I don't want to miss a thing.
