The Battle of the Five Armies had a taken a lot from everyone, had taken family members, company members, and the heirs of Durin. Gandalf knew that Bilbo would not be able to make it another day in Erebor without Thorin at his side, so he set out to Rivendell with the hobbit at his side. Bilbo was not fully aware of what was happening around him, his thoughts still lingered to how he would never be able to see Thorin again, never be able to feel him, or hear his voice for that matter. Gandalf was very cautious around Bilbo, afraid that he would snap any second and go on a rampage, or worse, try to join Thorin.
When they finally reached Rivendell Gandalf alerted Elrond right away of Bilbo's condition, and Elrond felt the upmost sympathy for him. As Gandalf took the hobbit to explore more of Rivendell, Elrond went to alert his guard to keep an eye on Bilbo. The hobbit was completely unpredictable, and the wizard didn't know if he was going to attempt to be with Thorin or not, so he stayed by Bilbo's side.
The only thing that was going through my head right now was that I had failed him, I failed Thorin Oakenshield, and he paid the price. When we were sitting in that tent he had finally told me his true feelings and that he had felt them since I saved him from Azog. I told him my true feelings also, and that I have loved him since the Misty Mountains, when he saved my life. As Thorin had taken his final breaths he whispered that he knew I would never stop loving him, but that I had to let him go. As he took his final breath he whispered that he will never stop loving me, even in death, and that we would meet again.
I figured that what he meant by that was that we would see each other in death, once I had died. Thorin knew that I had a ring that turned me invisible, but what he didn't know was that it also prolongs age, so it would be a while before I met Thorin again. I know I haven't been wearing the ring that long, but I am never going to give it up.
