Love and Billywig Stings

"You're sure about this?"

"That's the fifth time you've asked me that today. Are you having second thoughts?"

"No, of course not." Ginny stared through the window of the Magical Menagerie, dreading the coming hour she'd have to spend inside. She gave Luna a reassuring smile and took her hand. "Ready?"

"If you're sure."

Ginny followed the smaller girl into the shop and allowed herself to be dragged around to look in various cages and containers.

Normally Ginny wouldn't have been so opposed to looking at animals. She'd grown up with three owls, two cats, a rat, and one puffskein – and most of the time she was the one who had to feed them all. Not to mention little Arnold, who was at home, asleep on the little bed Luna had made for him.

Searching for a pet with Luna was different than being alone. She'd been friends with the former Ravenclaw for almost ten years, and she'd never had a problem with her eccentric ways until they moved in together a few weeks ago.

Deciding on which creature would become your pet seemed like an adventure when your girlfriend could easily decide she wants a kappa.

"What about a fwooper?" Luna asked, flipping through a catalogue of exotic pets. Ginny thought of the disasters that could arise if either of them forgot to put a silencing charm on the madness-inducing bird.

"Probably not a good idea. And one of us would need to get a license for it anyway." Luna hummed in response, flipping through pages of more deadly creatures but not naming any to Ginny.

The redhead wandered off toward a terrarium of baby turtles and stopped to admire them. She looked up a few minutes later, expecting to see her girlfriend deciding between a chimaera and a manticore, but Luna was gone. She could see the entire store from her position, so she ran to the door and went out onto the street.

Her head whipped around, searching for a glimpse of Luna's dirty blonde hair or the lemon yellow dress she'd been wearing. Ginny sighed, unable to see her anywhere. It wasn't unusual for Luna to wander off or apparate away when she gets a crazy idea in her head, but she'd been the one who was pushing for a pet, and it wasn't like her to skip out on something she was looking forward to.

"Ginny? What are you doing out here?"

Ginny whirled around to find Luna peeking out of the Menagerie's doors. "I was looking for you. You disappeared."

"I went into the back room. One of the crups gave birth last week and the puppies are so cute, you have to come see!" She snatched Ginny's hand and pulled her all the way to the back room to look at three baby Jack Russell terrier-lookalikes with tiny forked tails.

"What do you think?" Luna asked excitedly.

"You … want a crup?"

"…Yes?"

"I just thought you'd want something more unique." Luna laughed.

"Those are nice to look at in the wild, but I couldn't keep one at home. You didn't really think I'd do that to you, did you?"

Ginny blushed. "I might have been a bit worried." Luna laughed again and kissed her cheek.

"I'd never do that to you. I love you."

"I love you too. Now which of these puppies did you want?"

"All three?" She batted her eyelashes and Ginny rolled her eyes.

"I can't say no to you, can I?"

"Not really," she replied happily, petting the puppies.
