They were standing in the shadows of the tunnel, waiting for their cue. Wally was vibrating in anticipation while Dick and Barbara just checked their weapons every once in a while. They knew timing was everything, and this was something they couldn't afford to screw up.
When Artemis was shot, Dick felt a strong, slender hand slip into his own. He gently squeezed, telling her it would be all right. They knew it was fake blood and both Kaldur and Artemis were alright because M'gann would never intentionally harm them, but that didn't stop them from worrying. They both heard Wally's slight gasp, because it had to be hard seeing your girlfriend fake-die for the second time (Even though it had really happened three times) Leaning his head over to Barbara's, Dick whispered into her ear as quietly as possible, "It's alright."
Barbara replied just as softly. "I know that, but I'm still worried. Just think how Wally must feel about this."
"I would feel the same way if it was you." He wasn't sure what compelled him to say that, she had made her opinion about their relationship clear, but he felt she should know just how much he cared for her. Barbara's hand stiffened in his own, and slowly, she turned to face him. He looked into her navy eyes, seeing the emotions displayed there.
After a full minute of just staring, they launched themselves at each other, lips locked and eyes closed. Richard and Barbara. Barbara and Richard. Dick and Barb. Barb and Dick. Nightwing and Batgirl. Batgirl and Nightwing. No matter how many times they repeated it in their heads, it never got old. They stayed like that, just grateful that the other was alive, until Wally tapped them on their shoulders and told them it was time to go. When they jumped out into the cave, in full view of all the villains, they knew they were late by a good twenty seconds. But that didn't matter to the two bats.
Because maybe timing wasn't everything.
