Percy looked around, finally satisfied. Today was the Fourth of July and he was throwing a party.
Why? Well, he reasoned that since Nico was stuck in the Lotus Hotel and Casino for so long, he had never seen fireworks, or been to a real Fourth of July party. Percy was ready to show Nico some American spirit, even if he was Italian.
Then the doorbell rang and he went to open it. Annabeth and Thalia were standing outside in summer outfits, one of each of their hands on a very disgruntled Nico.
Nico was wearing a black aviator's jacket, at least five sizes too big for him, a black t-shirt, and black jeans. Percy didn't know how Nico was not hot. He himself was sweating like crazy even though he was a son of Poseidon.
Nico scowled at Percy with a look that said "Really? I think you went a little overboard." Well, that was not entirely untrue. Red, white and blue banners hung from the ceiling. Blue cookies with red chocolate chips were cooling on the counter. There was a huge American flag propped up on the T.V.
After plenty of games of Scrabble(which Annabeth won all of), some sparring(which resulted in Percy caught in a headlock, courtesy of Thalia), and eating cookies(of which Nico had way too many), they group was finally ready to go see the fireworks.
Nico came along happily, to the surprise of his fellow demigods. Maybe if was the promise of seeing something he had never seen before, or too much sugar. Percy really hoped it wasn't the latter.
After setting down a picnic blanket, the group decided to sing some patriotic songs. Mainly because Percy wanted Nico to show some American spirit, but Nico didn't know any songs.
After Annabeth sang The Star Spangled Banner at the pace of a funeral march, Nico spoke up, saying that he did know one song that the Stoll brothers taught him. After some coaxing, Nico was ready to sing.
"This land is your land"
Annabeth sat up a little straighter. She knew this song.
"It is not your land"
Now Annabeth looked confused. These weren't' the lyrics.
"I have a shotgun, and you don't have one"
She got up to lecture Nico about bad language, but Percy pulled her down and motioned for Nico to continue.
"If you don't get off, I'll blow your head off"
Now even Percy looked confused. Only Thalia was still smiling.
"This land was made for only me"
And with that line, Nico collapsed. Thalia crawled past a stunned Annabeth and Percy to check his pulse.
"Sugar rush", she announced.
