A/N: It's been a while with no story. I have no good excuse for that. But I was struck with inspiration tonight for Rosalie and Jacob, and that is why I am typing on the computer in the middle of the night instead of being in bed asleep like I should be. I was having trouble getting started, and then I was inspired by this quote. It would mean a lot to me if you could review after you read and let me know what you think. Thank you for reading!
Amen, amen. But come what sorrow can,
It cannot countervail the exchange of joy
That one short minute gives me in her sight.
Do thou but close our hands with holy words,
Then love-devouring death do what he dare;
It is enough I may but call her mine.
-Romeo, Romeo and Juliet
She sees him sitting there; sitting on the edge of the cliff, staring down into the water, deep in thought. As usual, he looked gorgeous. And that smell that should drive her away, only pulled her closer. It was intoxicating. Hypnotic. She loved it yet loathed it at the same time. Just like him.
She quietly walks up and sits down beside him, dangling her feet over the edge. She softly kisses his forehead, worried always that her strength might hurt him. He smiles, coming out of his trance. Happy to see her as he always was.
"I should not be here," she says, pushing a pebble off the ledge into the crashing waves below.
"It's your life. You can do as you please," he replies.
She laughs bitterly. "A life. If you can call it that."
There is a moment of silence, but a comfortable silence. She never had these moments with her husband. He had to fill in every inevitable silence with some joke or some comment about a sports team. She did not have the room in her mind to think with him around. She was happy to find someone different; someone who she was comfortable with, someone who helped her to be herself. Raw and uncut. Pure and whole. Alive.
"He would kill you if he knew, you know. It would break his heart."
He looks up, meeting her eyes for the first time. His eyes were open portals to his mind, showing her everything that was going on in his mind and in his heart. "Do you really have no idea, my feeling for you? He can kill me if he wants, I am just pleased for the moments like that that I may spend with you. If he kills me, then it will all be worth it."
That heart of hers that never beat, she feels for just a moment, imagines for that one simple moment, that it skips a beat. "I love you," she whispers.
He smiles. "I love that I can call you mine, even if it's for but this one short moment."
