-4.35 am, Watchtower Medical Bay.

Shayera's eyes snapped open as she felt the firm pressure on her right hand. Tired and sleep deprived, her eyes fluttered open as her mind registered that she was in the Watchtower's Medical Bay.

Abruptly, everything came back to her.

Vigilante cracking ridiculous old cowboy jokes that only he understood with her in the Monitor Room, J'onn assigning them the bank robbery in Metropolis. Vigilante shoving her out of the way and catching a bullet through the shoulder.

Vague recollections of how she'd called for back up, something Shayera had never done though all her years of service in the League, then grabbing Vigilante and rushing to the Medical Bay.

Vigilante kept his on Shayera's hand and smiled at her.

The visible relief on her face more than made up for the bullet through his shoulder. Now he had proof that she cared.

But his happiness was short lived as he watched the relief in her eyes rapidly change to anger.

"What the hell did you think you were doing?" she said, her low voice hinting at the infamous temper that she was both known and feared for.

"Well, I'm sorry doll face. I was under the impression I was saving your feathery behind." Vigilante shot back, then regretting it the minute the effort of speaking tore racking coughs from his chest.

Shayera's face softened.

"Listen, Vigilante... I'm sorry alright? It wasn't fair of me to say that to you when you've just woken up," Shayera said apologetically.

Vigilante started to smile until she added, "I should have waited till tomorrow at least."

Vigilante snorted, " I should have known better than expect an apology from the world's proudest woman."

"Come on, Vigilante-"

Vigilante cut her off. "It's Greg. Greg Saunders if you wanna be all proper about it." At her questioning look, he explained. "It's just that ever since I joined the League, I hear my real name lesser and lesser. If we're going to be friends, I'd prefer you called me by my first name."

"Done. I know how that feels. I was Hawkgirl for so long and a leading officer in the Thanagarian army for even longer. After all that, it's good to just be Shayera Hol again." Shayera admitted.

"So, friends then, Shayera?" Vigilante asked.

"Friends then... Greg." Shayera said, reaching to shake his hand then stopping when she saw the IV's sticking out of his wrist. Leaning forward, she pressed her lips to his forehead.

"It's hard to not be friends with a man that save your life, right?" she grinned.

"Damn right."

Shayera spent the rest of the week alternating between visiting Vigilante in the Medical Bay and Monitor Duty.
