There was a steady drip of blood on the floor, and the sound of labored breath. Both were his and Remus's. Remus had his eyes clenched shut but the rest of his body was limp. He breathed heavily through his gritted teeth, trying very hard to block out the pain. Sirius's heart broke to see him like this.
Sirius was shaky on his paws as he rose up and shifted back to his human form, then crawled to Remus. He kneeled beside his friend, and held his hand gently so that he wouldn't hurt the ripped up palm. The wolf had run him ragged last night; he had been so out of control. Moony had fought violently then, howling, left his pack mate in the dust. At least he hadn't had the blood urge to keep hurting Sirius. But Sirius still had trouble containing him.
Remus moaned for Sirius. He tried to roll over and get on his hands and knees but couldn't even get onto his side without having to fall onto his back from pain.
"Siri, help! Hurts bad." He cried desperately, in a cracked voice.
"Right here Remmi, I'm right here." He reassured him. Sirius felt Remus's hand grip his tightly as his low strength would allow, "Remmi, if you want your potion…"
"NO! Please don't go, Paddy." Remus sniffed. He could feel the blood dripping from his deep wounds and while he knew the potions would help with the pain, he wanted comfort more.
Sirius didn't know what else to do, most nights that would be the first thing he asked for, and then he would ask for- "Siri, sing me Sunshine." Remus asked, sounding very small, but when he was small, that would be his comfort song, the one his mother sang for him when he was young. But his mother hadn't been there to sing Sunshine for years, not since he started at Hogwarts and he wasn't going to ask Madam Pomfry to sing it for him. He was a little stronger than that. But Sirius cared about him, and when he heard that Remus used to be sung to after full moons, and when Remus decided he liked Sirius's voice, he started singing for him.
"Ok Remmi, I'll sing you sunshine. I will always sing you sunshine." Sirius smiled at him, sadly, and then cleared his throat.
"You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away."
Remus gave Sirius a genuine smile, hearing the song. He loved to hear Sirius sing. But he loved it even more when he sang sunshine.
"Can you sing it again, Paddy?" He asked hopefully.
"Sure."
And Sirius sang the song again and again on Remus's request. Soon he calmed him with the song enough to fetch his pain and healing potions and Remus fell asleep.
Sirius thought about how the song could be made better by replacing sunshine with Remus being his Moonshine. He tried it out.
"You are my moonshine
My only moonshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my moonshine away."
Yeah that sounded better to Sirius. His Moonshine. He stroked Remus's hair.
"I love you, my Moonshine. Never go away."
