Lately, he had been lying to himself and even he was listening to himself less and less each passing day.
When the youngling was late by half an hour last night, he didn't go find him out of worry or even mild concern. No, he went and found him still playing in the gardens because he knew it would be more of a pain for him if something had happened to the boy.
This morning he allowed the hyper monkey to replace the flower on his desk. Not for the fact it was nice to look at, but for the knowledge that the boy would probably not stop pestering him otherwise.
He hadn't spent anytime thinking about the boys name when he pestered him for one. He just said the first thing that came to mind so the child would hopefully give him five minutes of peace.
He didn't start going over to Tenpou's more to make sure that Goku didn't pick up anything bad from one of Tenpou's strewn books or from one of Kenren's antics. He simply went for personal gain to see if Tenpou had any information regarding what might be going on in the higher military workings of Heaven.
Even now he wasn't setting his paper down at the intruding noise of the child's whimpering in his sleep out of concern, he wasn't sliding quietly out of bed past the midnight hour because he cared and he most certainly was not putting the kicked aside blanket back over the boys huddled and shivering form out of a newly acquired habit.
After sliding back in bed and picking up the newspaper, his violet eyes did not linger on Goku's resting, now happy and quiet, form for a few seconds out of affection.
Not at all since that would mean he cared. And there was no way, he thought while turning a page of the newspaper, that he cared.
Self-deceit was never easy, especially if you knew you were lying.

Authors Note:
While writing this, I got an idea for Chibi-fic. Not enough Modern Day AU's with Konzen and chibi-Goku that aren't yaoi.0_o.
Fun Fact: This was originally going to be Sanzo before realizing that Konzen needs love too.
