Booth sat by Cam's hospital bed, holding her hand trying to fight back tears. It was his fault she was in the bed in the first place. Epps had escaped the electric chair because he had been lenient and reopened the investigation. And he had pressured Cam into moving quickly in her autopsy in order to get information. Maybe he had been irrational, but what father wouldn't be? When Epps pulled Parker into this, Booth went a little crazy and was ready to kill anyone even associated with Epps.
One thing was clear, it was time to break things off with Cam. She didn't deserve this, being involved with someone in high risk situations and consequences. But that wasn't the real reason he was breaking it off with her. In that moment, when his girlfriend was laying in a hospital bed, there was somewhere else he wanted to be, someone else he needed to be with and protect.
Chapter Two:
Brennan stood at the dock watching Sully sail away. "Temperance", he'd named his boat after her. Wow, she couldn't believe she was standing there. She knew a lot of people would blame Sully for leaving her, but the truth was that he had asked her to come; she'd been the one to refuse.
In the interrogation room, when he'd asked her about Booth, she'd found her heart breaking for what felt like all the wrong reasons, and when she saw Booth's goofy thumbs up through the window, it broke again for reasons she couldn't identify. Now she knew how it felt to reject someone, and she was surprised at both the hurt and release she had felt. But when it came down to it, there was somewhere else she needed to be, someone else she needed to be with.
She felt his presence without even turning around, but after awhile, she still turned, just to make sure she wasn't dreaming.
"What are you doing here Booth?"
