Set shortly after One Stormy Night...
Madame Vastra was sat in her study concentrating on a case. The cold November night was getting to her. She sighed and buried her head in her hands, cursing in Silurian.
"Come on, Vastra. Concentrate." She said sternly to herself, and she got back to her work. The words started to blur and her head throbbed, but still she persevered. The woman wanted nothing more to stop working and curl up next to the woman she loved, Jenny Flint, but she did also need to get to the bottom of this rather gruesome murder.
"You alright, Ma'am?" Jenny asked, poking her head round the door. "The cold's not bein' too harsh on you, is it?"
Vastra rubbed her temples and then her eyes. "Oh, what is it with ape society?! Why can't you just all get along and not kill each other?! Why do you have to be so... So..." The older woman stopped when she noticed the pained expression on Jenny's face. The human walked over to Vastra.
"Confusing world, ain't it, Ma'am?" Jenny sighed, knowing Vastra didn't really mean it. She bent down and kissed her girlfriend's temple, making Vastra smile and the migraine hurt slightly less. "Better?"
"Much better, dear. Thank you." Vastra stroked Jenny's cheek.
"Just doin' my job, Ma'am." The younger woman walked towards the door but turned back. "I am your girlfriend, after all."
The Silurian grinned and kept grinning like a schoolgirl until she finished her work for the evening.
Jenny was half asleep when Vastra finally finished her work. She hadn't solved the case yet - she needed more evidence, and was far too tired and cold - but she was extremely close, and she wanted to find Jenny. Poor Jenny hadn't been getting much attention from Vastra since this case came up. The human girl was curled up in Vastra's favourite armchair, head on an armrest, legs tucked tightly beneath her. Her eyelids were half shut and her ebony hair falling out of its bun. Vastra could feel herself getting dangerously cold despite the warm fire in the room. If she didn't hurry, she'd go into hibernation.
"Jenny..." She whispered as she flopped onto the armchair, practically sitting on the younger woman.
"Huh?! What?! Ow! Ma'am!" She sat up suddenly and laughed. "What are you doin'? You nearly squashed me flat!"
"Cold... Too... Cold..." The room went blurry and her migraine was taking over. "It hurts... Hiber... Nation..."
"Oh, you stupid lizard! We spoke 'bout this!" Jenny sighed, wrapping her arms around Vastra. She started to warm up immediately and the pain dulled slightly.
"I just wanted to get my work done. I've been so busy lately..."
"I know. You're heart's in the right place, you just need to think things through more." She kissed her Vastra's forehead. "What would have happened if you didn't make it and went into hibernation?"
"Oh, hush now, you've made your point!" Jenny laughed softly and laid her head in Vastra's lap.
"This is nice. No knocks on the door. No screams. No running. Just you and me, Ma'am."
"Jenny, dear, you don't need to call me Ma'am. Not anymore." Vastra said softly to the sleepy human.
"I don't mind. Besides, it'll help me remember to call you Ma'am and be all formal when we're out in public." The sleepy girl looked up at the green woman. "Any warmer?"
Vastra gave in. She was too tired to debate about names. "Much warmer, thank you, dear." She paused for a minute and gazed into Jenny's eyes. "I love you."
Jenny smiled and shut her eyes.
"I love you, too."
