Ice Storm

"How long ago did she leave?" asked Abby into her cell. "A while ago? Maybe Connor and I should go looking."

Connor made a face. "It's sleeting pretty hard now. I think we should stay put."

Abby hung up her cell. "Yeah, that's what Becker says. He's leaving the ARC now anyway. He's going to look for her."

"She probably just stopped for chocolate or something," Connor said with a smile.

Abby frowned. "What if she didn't? What if it's getting slick? Remember, Jess' car doesn't have the best breaks."

Connor nodded and put an arm around her. "Don't worry. If Becker says he'll find her, he will."

After about twenty minutes, Abby was pacing. "I can't wait any longer. I'm going out to look."

"Abby…" began Connor but he was interrupted by a commotion at the front door.

Becker burst through with Jess was in his arms, leaning sideways and trying to retrieve her key from the lock. They were both giggling.

Abby and Connor stared. Connor cleared his throat getting their attention.

"Oh, hi!" Jess cried happily. Becker turned pink.

"Hi," said Connor, smirking. "Don't you two look…cozy?"

Abby laughed. "Are you OK?"

"Hmm?" Jess had been staring into a pair of super-close brown eyes. "Oh! I'm fine. Now, that is."

Connor chuckled.

Becker frowned. "Her car was stuck in the mud."

"After it slid across the ice," said Jess. "I had just gotten out when I heard his bellowing." She giggled.

"Who gets out to hike in ice with high heels?" asked Becker.

Jess giggled. "So he scooped me up, so I wouldn't slide and kill myself, and then carried me to his truck and drove me home. Isn't he sweet?"

"Yeah. Um, did you sit on his lap during the drive home?"

"Shut up Temple."

Abby stifled a laugh. "Thanks for finding her. I just had a feeling something was wrong."

"Aw. Sorry I worried you, Abby," said Jess. "I'm fine."

"Obviously. So…why didn't you call and tell us you found her? Were you too occupied, Becker?"

"Seriously, Temple, if you don't stop, I'll throttle you."

"With or without Jess in your arms?" Connor asked with a big dopey grin.

Abby laughed. "Stop it Conn. I'm glad you're alright, Jess. Connor, let's go to our room."

Connor was pulled out of the living room saying, "but if we leave, how do we know she'll stay alright? Huh?"

Becker shook his head. Then he looked into the blue eyes so close to his face. "I suppose I could put you down now."

She smiled. "I suppose."

They stared at each other, neither one moving.

"I'm actually fine," said Jess, stretching out a bit and wriggling her toes happily. "How about you?"

"My arms are starting to hurt a bit."

"Oh. Well, if you have to put me down, go ahead. Of course, my bedroom's just around the corner."

He cocked his eyebrow at her.

"Just saying." She stared at him innocently.

He laughed. "Not that you meant anything by that, right?"

"Right." She smiled sweetly. "Of course… I'm still a bit cold. Have any ideas how to get warm?"

He smirked. "One or two," he said, and headed around the corner.
