Chapter 1:
I awake with a startle. It was me. Thy chose me. But that's impossible, isn't it? I am the mayors daughter. They just couldn't choose me.
Its the morning of the reaping. I really shouldn't be worried.
I start getting dressed to distract myself from the upcoming events. I pull on an expensive blue dress that is only for the reaping.
My father walks in. "Hello, Madge," he says, a bit depressed.
"Hi...," I mumble, and start pulling my hair into a bun.
"Don't worry. They won't pick you," he whispers into my ear.
I don't reply.
An hour later I stand in my place for the reaping, along with the other 16 year olds. I run my fingered over my mockingjay pin. My father said it would protect me. Hopefully it will.
Effie Trinket prances onto the stage, wearing one of her signature outfits. "Hello, hello. Welcome to the reaping of the 74th annual Hunger Games!" She says, grinning. I have a little video for you all to watch, straight from the Capital!"
The film comes on over the stage. We have all seen it so many times, I'm pretty sure its permanently in our brains. Its about the uprising, the start of the Hunger Games, and other times. We are supposed to find this inspiring or something. I think Effie, President Snow, and the crazy Capital people do. Because they don't have to worry about getting put in an area with 23 other kids trying to kill you.
Finally the video ends, and Effie sighs with a smile. "So, let's get started! As usual, ladies first!" She walks over to the large glass bowl filled with innocent teenagers names in it. A chill goes through me.
Please don't let it be me. Please, please please. Effie opens the slip of paper.
"Madge Undersee," she says. No. This can not be happening. A few gasps escape from the surrounding teens.
"Any volunteers?" Silence.
The mayors daughter is going into the Hunger Games.
