oxymoron
„I had the weirdest dream last night," she informed him one day, while pouring some milk onto her cornflakes.
Paul considered it mildly alarming to see her this awake at eight am on a Monday morning, but decided he was too tired himself to care. "Did it include coffee?"
Dawn stopped in her tracks, mulling it over. "I think there were some suicidal teacups."
"Then I'm not interested." He shuffled over to the stove and began to heat up some water. From behind, he could hear her spoon clanking against the porcelain of her bowl. He pulled out a mug of one of the cupboards and proceeded to fill one fifth of it with coffee powder.
If there was one thing he needed right now, it was caffeine.
"You're sho inshenshitive, I can't remem'er why I mawwied you two iieeks ago."
Dawn possessed the unpleasant habit to talk with her mouth full, and although Ash had warned him that it was a congenital and incurable disease, Paul found—with faint horror—that he didn't mind it all too much.
After one and half a minute's wait, the water was ready. Eagerly, he tipped it into his mug, and stirred the black liquid with a spoon, before taking a great sip out of it. As he set the mug down again, he turned around. Smacking her lips with relish, his wife sat at the kitchen table, ate her cornflakes, and stared at him as though he was something she had just found growing under their bathroom sink. How she managed all this at the same time, he wasn't quite sure, but he figured it must be one of those "special talents men could never comprehend or learn, even if they attempted to", she had mentioned once. (He believed it to be called "multitasking".)
"I try," he said, and watched her slurp down the remains of her milk. The scene was beautiful, in a rather dysfunctional sort of way.
I'll go on, he thought, picking up the mug and swallowing another gulp of coffee. We can do this. And just above the rim of his cup, his mouth broke into a crooked smile.
