He saw his great leader falter. Emotions played across his face, though he tried to suppress them. He denied himself.
He poured his leader another cup of coffee. He didn't even notice. Jack stared at Gwen. He knew a little of his leader's reputation, but Gwen had him undone.
"It's dangerous," he said to his leader, "if you care about her."
His leader turned to him, the ghost of a lost love in his eyes. Ianto could nearly see her face, the girl killed in the Battle of Canary Warf.
They had both lost the women they loved there, but in different ways.
"Promise me," his leader's voice soft and broken, "that you'll watch over her."
"I will, Jack. We both will." As long as you forgive me if you ever find out about Lisa. Surely, even you would rather have your woman like her than dead.
